Give-way line (1022)

Give-way line

Road Markings Sign number: 1022

The line indicates the place where the duty to give way takes effect.

When you see the sign

Slow down and assess the traffic you must give way to before reaching Vikelinjen. You may continue without stopping if the way is clear, but you must stop before the line when necessary to comply with your duty to give way.

Rules

  • Vikelinjen indicates where your duty to give way begins.
  • You must not continue if doing so would obstruct or inconvenience a road user you must give way to.
  • You must clearly demonstrate that you are giving way by slowing down or stopping well in advance.
  • Vikelinjen does not in itself require you to stop unconditionally; you only need to stop when traffic conditions require it.

Tips

  • Ease off the accelerator early and be ready to brake before Vikelinjen.
  • Look for vehicles, cyclists and other road users on the road you are entering or crossing.
  • If visibility is poor, you should stop before the line and then move forward very carefully to get a better view.
  • Avoid stopping on or beyond the line, as you may then enter the area where other traffic has priority.

Common misconceptions

  • !Thinking that Vikelinjen always requires you to stop completely. It is stopplinjen together with stoppskilt that requires an unconditional stop.
  • !Treating Vikelinjen as a lane line or warning line. Vikelinjen runs across the direction of travel and marks where your duty to give way begins.
  • !Looking only for cars from the left and overlooking road users from the right or cyclists on a crossing route.

What does this road marking show?

  • AThe place where a barrier line begins
  • BThe place where vikeplikt (duty to yield) takes effect
  • CThe place where changing lanes involves danger
  • DThe place where an unconditional stop is required

Medium

You are approaching this road marking, and a cyclist on a crossing route will be obstructed if you continue. What do you do?

  • AI stop after the road marking so that the cyclist has to pass behind the car.
  • BI reduce speed and stop if necessary so that the cyclist can pass.
  • CI maintain the same speed because the cyclist must stop when I am closest to the intersection.
  • DI continue because vikeplikt (duty to yield) applies only to cars coming from the left.

Hard

You are approaching this road marking with good visibility, and there are no road users for whom you must yield. What is correct?

  • AYou always stop completely before the road marking and then continue.
  • BYou avoid crossing the road marking because it functions as a barrier line.
  • CYou continue unchanged because the road marking only warns of poor visibility.
  • DYou reduce speed well in advance and may continue without stopping.

Theory test tip

A common trap is to answer that you must always stop at Vikelinjen. The correct answer is that you must give way and stop if necessary; an unconditional stop applies at stoppskilt and the associated stopplinje.

Did you know

Vikelinjen is a transverse road marking that makes it easier to see exactly where your duty to give way begins. It is often used together with a vikepliktskilt to clearly indicate its position at the junction.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always have to stop at Vikelinjen?

No. You may continue if you have a sufficiently clear view and do not obstruct or inconvenience the traffic you must give way to.

Where should I stop if I have to give way?

You should stop before Vikelinjen. If visibility from there is insufficient, you may then move forward carefully without obstructing the traffic you must give way to.

What is the difference between Vikelinjen and stopplinjen?

Vikelinjen marks where your duty to give way begins, but does not always require you to stop. A stopplinje indicates where you must stop when you are required to do so, normally at stoppskilt or a red traffic signal.

Can I drive over Vikelinjen when a vehicle is approaching on the main road?

Only if you can do so without obstructing or inconveniencing the vehicle you must give way to. If the other vehicle has to change speed or direction because of you, you must wait.
