Symbol for persons with reduced mobility (1042)

Symbol for persons with reduced mobility

Road Markings Sign number: 1042

When you see the sign

The symbol indicates that the parking space is reserved for people with disabilities who have a valid parking permit. You must not park there without such a permit, and you must check the road markings and any signs to see which spaces and times the reservation applies to.

Rules

  • The parking space may only be used when there is a valid parking permit for people with disabilities.
  • The permit is personal and may only be used when the permit holder is driving the vehicle or being transported in it.
  • The parking permit must be displayed clearly behind the windscreen, with the front side visible for inspection.
  • The road markings apply to the parking space or parking area in which they are located; signs and other markings may define the area more precisely.

Tips

  • Look for the wheelchair symbol both on the ground and on parking signs before leaving your vehicle.
  • Do not use the space even if you are only running a quick errand; find a regular parking space instead.
  • Also keep the hatched area beside such a space clear, as it may be needed for a ramp, wheelchair or lift.
  • If you have a valid permit, check any time limits and other conditions shown on the sign.

Common misconceptions

  • !Assuming that the space may be used without a permit if all other spaces are occupied.
  • !Assuming that old age, an injury or reduced mobility alone is sufficient; a valid parking permit is required.
  • !Borrowing someone else’s parking permit when the permit holder is not in the vehicle.
