Pedestrian symbol
When you see the sign
Gangsymbol is a road marking indicating that the marked area is intended for pedestrians. As a driver, you must not use the area as a normal traffic lane, and if you need to cross it, you must drive slowly and avoid obstructing or endangering pedestrians.
Rules
- Gangsymbol indicates a part of the road or facility intended for pedestrians.
- The symbol is not the same as the marking for a pedestrian crossing and does not, by itself, establish the same give-way rules as a pedestrian crossing.
- When driving across a pavement or pedestrian path, drivers must give way to pedestrians.
- Other signs and road markings at the location determine whether the area is a pedestrian path, a shared pedestrian and cycle path, or another arrangement for pedestrians.
Tips
- Look for a cycle symbol next to Gangsymbol; the symbols may indicate which part pedestrians and cyclists should use.
- Reduce your speed before crossing an area marked with Gangsymbol, and be prepared for children or other pedestrians who may move unpredictably.
- Look for pedestrian-crossing stripes when determining whether the special give-way rules for pedestrian crossings apply.
Common misconceptions
- Assuming that Gangsymbol alone marks a pedestrian crossing across the carriageway.
- Confusing the symbol with a warning sign indicating pedestrians further ahead.
- Overlooking that the pedestrian and cycle areas may be separated, giving cyclists and pedestrians their own marked sections.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this road marking mean?
- AIt warns of pedestrians farther ahead on the road.
- BIt indicates a gangfelt (pedestrian crossing) crossing the carriageway.
- CIt indicates an area intended for pedestrians.
- DIt indicates a traffic lane intended for cyclists.
Medium
You are going to drive onto a property and must cross a sidewalk where this road marking is used. A person is walking along the sidewalk. What do you do?
- AI go first because I am coming from the person's right-hand side.
- BI yield to the pedestrian before crossing the sidewalk.
- CI stop only if the pedestrian gives a clear signal.
- DI go first because the road marking is not a gangfelt.
Hard
This road marking is painted at a crossing place, but there is no striped marking for a gangfelt. What is correct?
- AThe marking alone warns of pedestrians farther ahead on the road.
- BThe marking alone gives the same vikeplikt as at a gangfelt.
- CThe marking alone does not make the crossing place a gangfelt.
- DThe marking alone separates lanes with different directions of travel.
Theory test tip
The common trap is to answer that Gangsymbol automatically gives pedestrians priority in the same way as at a pedestrian crossing. Look for the striped pedestrian-crossing marking; Gangsymbol primarily indicates which area is intended for pedestrians.
Did you know
Gangsymbol is often used together with a cycle symbol to clarify how the space is divided on shared pedestrian and cycle facilities.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gangsymbol the same as a pedestrian crossing?
No. A pedestrian crossing is marked with broad stripes across the carriageway, while Gangsymbol indicates an area intended for pedestrians.
Can I drive on an area marked with Gangsymbol?
It must not be used as a normal traffic lane. If lawful access requires you to cross a pavement or pedestrian path, you must do so carefully and give way to pedestrians.
Does the symbol mean that cyclists cannot be there?
Not necessarily; this depends on the signs and how the facility is designed. In a shared arrangement, the pedestrian and cycle symbols may indicate separate sections, while a shared pedestrian and cycle path can be used by both.
Does Gangsymbol give pedestrians priority when crossing a road?
No, the symbol alone does not establish a pedestrian crossing or give pedestrians a separate right of way. The give-way rules must be assessed based on the pedestrian crossing, signs, traffic regulations, and whether the vehicle is crossing a pavement or pedestrian path.
