Speed hump (1027)

Speed hump

Road Markings Sign number: 1027

When you see the sign

Reduce your speed before reaching the road marking and approach the speed hump at a speed that is safe and gentle on the vehicle. Pay particular attention to pedestrians, cyclists and traffic from side roads, as speed humps are often used where low speeds are needed.

Rules

  • Road marking 1027 indicates that there is a speed hump in the roadway.
  • The marking does not in itself set a specific speed limit; the applicable posted or general speed limit still applies.
  • You must adjust your speed so that you remain in control and can stop within the distance you can see to be clear, including at the speed hump.
  • You must not move into the opposing lane or onto the pavement to avoid the speed hump.

Tips

  • Finish braking before the front wheels reach the hump, and maintain a steady, low speed over it.
  • Look for the marking well in advance, especially in darkness, rain or snow, when the hump itself may be difficult to see.
  • Keep extra distance from the vehicle in front, as its driver may brake sharply before the hump.
  • Reduce your speed further if the vehicle has low ground clearance, a heavy load or a trailer.

Common misconceptions

  • !Assuming that the marking indicates a specific speed limit, such as 30 km/h. It warns of a speed hump, while the speed limit must be established by other signs or the general rules.
  • !Waiting to brake until the vehicle is on the hump. Heavy braking on the hump itself can reduce control and make crossing it harsher.
  • !Confusing the white sections with a road marking that regulates lane changes or overtaking.

Theory test tip

In the theory test, the trap may be that the marking is presented as requiring a specific speed. The correct interpretation is that it marks a speed hump: You must adjust your speed to the conditions, but the marking does not change the speed limit on its own.

Did you know

The speed hump marking makes a physical speed-reducing measure easier to spot. It is often used in residential areas and other places where drivers must keep their speed low, but it may become less visible when the roadway is covered with snow.

Frequently asked questions

Does the marking mean that the speed limit is 30 km/h?

No. Road marking 1027 indicates a speed hump, not a specific speed limit. Any 30 km/h speed limit must be established in another way.

Do I always have to brake at a speed hump?

You must choose a speed that allows you to pass safely and under control. How much you need to reduce your speed depends, among other things, on the design of the hump, the road conditions and the vehicle.

Can I drive around the hump in the opposing lane?

You must not make a dangerous or illegal lateral movement to avoid the hump. Pass over the hump in your own lane at an appropriate speed.

Does a speed hump count as a pedestrian crossing?

No, a speed hump is not automatically a pedestrian crossing. The right-of-way rules for pedestrian crossings apply only when the location is marked as a pedestrian crossing, but you must still watch out for pedestrians.
