Combined lines (1006.5)

Combined lines

Road Markings Sign number: 1006.5

At combined lines, road users must comply with the line closest to them. A vehicle that has crossed into a lane for oncoming traffic may nevertheless return to the right-hand side of the road. A double yellow warning line indicates the separation between lanes in which the direction of travel may be varied.

When you see the sign

The marking Dobbel, gul varsellinje means that the lanes on either side may have varying directions of travel. Check signs, traffic signals or other instructions showing which lanes are open in your direction of travel, and do not use a lane just because it appears to be empty.

Rules

  • Dobbel, gul varsellinje separates lanes where the direction of travel may vary.
  • Where combined lines are used, follow the line closest to your vehicle.
  • The road marking alone does not indicate which direction of travel applies at that moment; this must be shown by signs, lane-control signals or other traffic regulation.
  • A warning line is not a solid line, but it warns of an area where crossing or changing lanes requires particular caution.
  • If you have driven into a lane for oncoming traffic, you may cross the line to return to the right-hand side of the road.

Tips

  • Look well ahead for lane-control signals above the road, especially a green arrow or a red cross.
  • Keep a good distance from Dobbel, gul varsellinje so that you do not unintentionally enter a lane with traffic travelling in the opposite direction.
  • Do not automatically follow the vehicle in front into a variable lane; check for yourself that the lane is open in your direction.
  • Be prepared for lane use to change depending on the time of day or traffic volume.

Common misconceptions

  • !Assuming that a double yellow line is always a double solid line. When both lines are warning lines, the meaning is that the direction of travel in the lanes may vary.
  • !Assuming that an empty lane can be used without checking lane-control signals or signs.
  • !Assuming that yellow road markings always mean that traffic on the other side is coming towards you; with Dobbel, gul varsellinje, the direction may be regulated and vary.
