Supplementary Plates Sign number: 808.42b

The supplementary plate is used when it is not appropriate to provide the relevant regulation or information by means of a supplementary plate with a symbol, number or other indication. 810 (Example)

When you see the sign

Read the text on the supplementary plate together with the main sign above it. Adapt your driving to the clarification, restriction or additional information provided by the text, and do not interpret the supplementary plate as a sign in its own right.

Rules

  • The supplementary plate applies to the main sign it is placed below.
  • The text is used when the regulation or information cannot be conveyed appropriately with a symbol, number or another standardised supplementary plate.
  • The wording determines how the main sign is to be understood, for example which road users, situations or areas the regulation applies to.
  • A text supplementary plate does not automatically indicate distance, extent or duration; this must be stated explicitly in the text.

Tips

  • Read the entire text early, while continuing to pay attention to the traffic and the road environment.
  • Always connect the text to the main sign before deciding what to do.
  • Pay particular attention to limiting words such as «except», «applies to» and «only», as they can change who or what the main sign covers.
  • If the text is difficult to read from a distance, reduce your speed safely so that you have time to understand the regulation.

Common misconceptions

  • !Reading the text as a standalone regulation without checking which main sign it belongs to.
  • !Assuming that any text below a sign indicates the distance to the point where the main sign starts to apply.
  • !Overlooking words such as «except» and consequently interpreting the main sign too broadly or in the opposite way.

Text (808.42b)

How should the supplementary plate be understood?

  • AIt always indicates how long the stretch of road is where the main sign applies.
  • BIt always indicates the times when the main sign applies.
  • CIt always indicates the distance to the area where the main sign applies.
  • DIt specifies how the main sign above is to be understood.

Medium

Beneath a sign prohibiting entry, there is this supplementary plate with the wording «Gjelder ikke buss og taxi». You are driving a passenger car. What do you do?

  • AI choose another route because the exception does not include passenger cars.
  • BI enter because a text supplementary plate only provides information.
  • CI enter because the exception applies to everyone who has an errand on the road.
  • DI enter if I drive as carefully as a taxi.

Hard

A text supplementary plate can both extend and limit how the main sign is to be understood. What applies when the text names specific vehicle groups as exceptions?

  • AOnly the groups mentioned are exempt; all others are covered by the main sign.
  • BAll vehicles with a similar purpose are exempt, even if they are not mentioned.
  • CThe text is advisory, and the driver decides whether the main sign applies.
  • DThe main sign is completely cancelled as soon as a text supplementary plate is put up.

Theory test tip

In the theory test, the trap may be to choose the meaning of «Avstand», «Utstrekning» or «Tid». The correct interpretation is that the specific wording clarifies the main sign, and that the text must be read together with it.

Did you know

Text supplementary plates make it possible to clarify local or unusual conditions for which there is no suitable standard symbol.

Frequently asked questions

Does the supplementary plate have any meaning on its own?

No. It should normally be understood together with the main sign above it. The text clarifies or limits the regulation or information conveyed by the main sign.

Can the text make an exception to the main sign?

Yes, the text can state that certain road users or situations are exempt. The exact wording determines how the exception is to be understood.

Does the sign always mean that the regulation starts further ahead?

No. Advance warning with a stated distance normally belongs to the supplementary plate «Avstand», whereas a text supplementary plate only provides such information if this is stated explicitly.

Can the text limit when the main sign applies?

Yes, if the wording explicitly states such a limitation. Standardised times are otherwise normally shown with the supplementary plate «Tid».
