Passenger car
The supplementary plate indicates passenger cars.
When you see the sign
Read the supplementary plate together with the main sign above it. If you are driving a passenger car, you must comply with the requirement, prohibition, restriction or information indicated by the main sign.
Rules
- Underskilt 807.1 indicates that the main sign applies to passenger cars.
- The supplementary plate has no independent meaning and must always be interpreted together with the main sign.
- A passenger car is a motor vehicle primarily designed to carry people, with no more than eight seats in addition to the driver's seat.
- The sign indicates a vehicle category, not a distance, extent or time period.
Tips
- Look at the main sign first to determine the actual rule, then use the supplementary plate to establish who the rule applies to.
- Check that the symbol shows a passenger car, not a van, bus or vehicle combination.
- When parking, check whether the supplementary plate reserves the space for passenger cars or makes a parking rule specifically applicable to them.
- Also read any other supplementary plates in the same sign assembly, such as a time plate.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think that the supplementary plate on its own means parking for passenger cars, but its meaning depends on the main sign.
- Some confuse the car symbol with the supplementary plate for vans, lorries and tractor units.
- Some assume that the sign applies to all motor vehicles, even though it specifically indicates passenger cars.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this supplementary plate mean?
- AIt indicates the distance to where the main sign takes effect.
- BIt indicates the extent of the main sign's effect.
- CIt limits the effect of the main sign to specific times.
- DIt limits the effect of the main sign to passenger cars.
Medium
A main sign indicates no parking, and this supplementary plate is below it. You are driving a passenger car. What do you do?
- AI park because the supplementary plate applies only to vans and lorries.
- BI park because the supplementary plate cancels the prohibition for my passenger car.
- CI park because the supplementary plate only indicates the distance to the prohibition.
- DI do not park because the prohibition applies to my passenger car.
Hard
A main sign is above this supplementary plate. You are driving a motor vehicle designed for passenger transport, with nine seats in addition to the driver's seat. How should the combination be understood?
- AThe main sign applies to the vehicle because nine passenger seats are permitted for a passenger car.
- BThe main sign does not apply to the vehicle because the supplementary plate covers only vans and lorries.
- CThe main sign does not apply to the vehicle because it has more than eight passenger seats.
- DThe main sign applies to the vehicle because all passenger transport is covered by the supplementary plate.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the common trap is to interpret the supplementary plate as an independent rule. First determine the meaning of the main sign, then limit the rule to passenger cars.
Did you know
Sign 807.1 is part of a series of supplementary plates that use different vehicle symbols to specify who a main sign applies to, including passenger cars, buses, vehicle combinations and small electric motor vehicles.
Frequently asked questions
Does the supplementary plate apply without a main sign?
No. It is a supplementary plate and only acquires its specific meaning when read together with the main sign above it.
Does the sign always mean that the area is reserved for passenger cars?
No. Under a parking sign, it may indicate who the parking area is intended for, but under a prohibition or mandatory sign, it limits the relevant rule to passenger cars.
Does the sign also apply to vans and lorries?
No, not when only this vehicle symbol is shown. Vans, lorries and tractor units are indicated by supplementary plate 807.2.
Does the sign indicate how far the main sign applies?
No. Distance and extent are indicated by other supplementary plates, while this supplementary plate indicates the passenger-car vehicle category.
