Course of forkjørsveg (822.3)

Course of forkjørsveg

Supplementary Plates Sign number: 822.3

The supplementary sign shows a schematic image of the junction, where a thick line indicates forkjørsveg and a thin line indicates a road where signs 202 “vikeplikt” or 204 “Stop” have been erected.

When you see the sign

Read the junction diagram before entering the junction: The wide line shows how the priority road continues, while the narrow lines show the adjoining roads. Position yourself correctly, adjust your speed and signal if the direction you are travelling makes it necessary.

Rules

  • The wide line shows the route of the priority road through the junction.
  • The narrow lines show roads that join the priority road.
  • The supplementary plate does not require you to choose a particular road; you may also turn off the priority road.
  • The sign does not cancel other duties, such as giving way when turning left, signalling and taking care around pedestrians and cyclists.

Tips

  • First identify which line represents the road you are approaching from, then follow the wide line through the diagram.
  • Slow down if the priority road changes direction in a way that makes the junction difficult to read.
  • Look for give-way signs or stop signs on the adjoining roads, but do not assume that other road users will actually stop.
  • Signal clearly when you are turning or making a significant lateral movement, including when following the route of the priority road.

Common misconceptions

  • !Assuming that the wide line represents the physically widest road. The line width shows which road is the priority road, not the road's actual size.
  • !Assuming that the sign requires the driver to follow the wide line. It only shows how the priority road runs through the junction.
  • !Assuming that traffic on the priority road never has to give way. When turning left, for example, the driver may still have to give way to oncoming traffic.

Course of forkjørsveg (822.3)

What does this supplementary plate show?

  • AThe wide line shows how far the main sign applies after the intersection.
  • BThe wide line shows which direction of travel all drivers must follow.
  • CThe wide line shows which road is physically widest at the intersection.
  • DThe wide line shows how the forkjørsveg runs through the intersection.

Medium

You want to turn off from the wide line onto a road shown by a narrow line. What do you do?

  • AYou must stop before turning off because the narrow line indicates no entry.
  • BYou can turn off without signaling because you are leaving the forkjørsveg.
  • CYou can turn off, but you must signal and follow the ordinary vikeplikt rules.
  • DYou must follow the wide line because the supplementary plate requires this direction of travel.

Hard

You follow the wide line through the intersection and must turn left. An oncoming car is going straight ahead. What applies?

  • AYou must give way to the oncoming car even though you are following the forkjørsveg.
  • BThe oncoming car must give way because the straight road is always an adjoining road.
  • CThe oncoming car must give way because you are following the wide line through the intersection.
  • DYou have priority because the wide line removes vikeplikt when turning left.

Theory test tip

In the theory test, the wide line may incorrectly be interpreted as the largest or straightest road. Remember that a wide line always marks the priority road, while a narrow line marks an adjoining road.

Did you know

The diagram is schematic and is not a scale map. The sign is used particularly at junctions where the priority road bends or follows a route that is not easy to understand from the road layout alone.

Frequently asked questions

Does the wide line mean that I have to drive that way?

No, the line only shows how the priority road runs through the junction. You may choose another direction if other signs and traffic rules allow it.

Do I always have the right to go first when I follow the wide line?

No, having priority is not an unconditional right to proceed. You must still act cautiously and may, among other things, have to give way to oncoming traffic when turning left.

Does the diagram show the exact shape of the junction?

No, the diagram is a simplified representation. What matters is which road branches are drawn with a wide and a narrow line.

Do I have to use my indicators when the priority road bends?

You must signal before turning or making a significant lateral movement. The fact that the priority road is marked with a wide line does not exempt you from the duty to warn others about your manoeuvre.
