Course of forkjørsveg
The supplementary sign shows a schematic image of the junction, where a thick line indicates forkjørsveg and a thin line indicates a road where signs 202 “vikeplikt” or 204 “Stop” have been erected.
When you see the sign
Read the diagram before entering the junction: The thick line shows the route of the priority road, while the thin lines show adjoining roads. Position yourself correctly, adjust your speed and use your turn signal if your direction of travel changes through the junction.
Rules
- The thick line shows the route of the priority road through the junction.
- The thin lines show roads that join the priority road.
- The supplementary plate must be read together with the main sign above it and does not regulate the junction on its own.
- Traffic from an adjoining road must comply with the give-way requirement indicated by signs and any road markings.
- You must use your turn signal when turning, including when the priority road bends and you follow it.
Tips
- First identify which line represents the road you are coming from, then follow the thick line through the diagram.
- Do not treat the thickest line as an indication of lane position; it shows the priority road, not lane placement.
- Look for turn signals and positioning by other drivers, as some may be following a bending priority road.
- Slow down early if the diagram shows a junction with limited visibility or a sharp turn.
Common misconceptions
- Thinking that the thick line shows the physically widest road or the road with the most lanes.
- Thinking that the supplementary plate indicates a distance or how long the main sign applies.
- Failing to signal because you are still following the priority road, even though you are actually turning.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this supplementary plate show?
- AIt shows the route of the forkjørsveg through the intersection.
- BIt shows the distance to the next intersection.
- CIt shows the periods during which the main sign applies.
- DIt shows how long the road section is for which the main sign applies.
Medium
The wide line shows that the forkjørsveg turns at the intersection, and you are going to follow the forkjørsveg. What must you do?
- ASignal in the direction in which the forkjørsveg turns, even though I remain on the forkjørsveg.
- BDrive without signaling because I retain priority through the intersection.
- CStop before the intersection and wait until traffic from the narrow line has passed.
- DFollow the narrow line because it shows the shortest route through the intersection.
Hard
The road straight ahead appears wider than the road that turns, but the wide line on the supplementary plate follows the turning road. Which assessment is correct?
- AThe forkjørsveg begins after the distance shown by the lines on the supplementary plate.
- BThe forkjørsveg applies on the road section shown by the lines on the supplementary plate.
- CThe forkjørsveg follows the wide line, regardless of the physical width of the roads.
- DThe forkjørsveg follows the physically widest road, regardless of the lines.
Theory test tip
A common trap is choosing the road that looks the straightest or widest in the illustration. In the theory test, it is always the thick line in the diagram that marks the priority road, even when it bends.
Did you know
The sign is used particularly at junctions where the priority road bends or follows a route that is not obvious from the road layout. The line thickness makes it possible to quickly understand the give-way arrangements from each approach to the junction.
Frequently asked questions
What does the thick line mean?
It shows how the priority road runs through the junction. It says nothing about the road's actual width or the number of lanes.
What do the thin lines mean?
They show roads that join the priority road. Traffic coming from them must comply with the give-way requirement indicated by signs and any road markings.
Do I have to signal when following a priority road that bends?
Yes. If you change direction by turning, you must signal. The fact that you are still on the priority road does not exempt you from the duty to use your turn signal.
Does the supplementary plate alone give priority?
No. It is a supplementary plate that explains the route and must be read together with the main sign and the other traffic regulations at the junction.
