When you see the Zeichen

You have Vorfahrt at the next intersection or junction over traffic coming from the joining or crossing roads. Nevertheless, approach attentively and at an appropriate speed, as other road users may overlook your Vorfahrt.

Rules

  • Zeichen 301 applies only to the immediately following intersection or junction.
  • At this intersection or junction, you have Vorfahrt over vehicles coming from the subordinate roads.
  • The sign does not permanently designate the road you are driving on as a Vorfahrtstraße; that is indicated by Zeichen 306.
  • When turning left, you must still give way to oncoming traffic despite Zeichen 301.
  • Anyone turning must pay particular attention to pedestrians and cyclists crossing the road they are turning into.

Tips

  • Check early which vehicles may approach from the side roads, and observe whether they actually wait.
  • Take your foot off the accelerator and be ready to brake if your view into the intersection is restricted.
  • Remember the shape: Zeichen 301 is a white triangle standing on its point, with a red border and a black symbol.
  • Look for traffic signs again after the intersection, because your Vorfahrt does not automatically continue beyond Zeichen 301.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Zeichen 301 is confused with Zeichen 306: Zeichen 301 grants Vorfahrt only at the next intersection or junction, whereas Zeichen 306 marks a Vorfahrtstraße with continuing effect.
  • !Some learner drivers believe that their Vorfahrt allows them to enter the intersection without checking or without reducing their speed.
  • !When turning left, people mistakenly assume that Zeichen 301 also gives them priority over oncoming traffic.

Exam tip

In test images, pay attention to whether you can see Zeichen 301 or Zeichen 306: with Zeichen 301, the indicated Vorfahrt ends after the next intersection or junction. Another typical trap is a vehicle turning left that, despite having Vorfahrt, must give way to oncoming traffic going straight ahead.

Did you know

Zeichen 301 is often colloquially called a “rocket”. Its unique shape and black intersection symbol help distinguish it clearly from the inverted triangle of Zeichen 205 “Vorfahrt gewähren”.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Zeichen 301 apply?

It applies exclusively at the next intersection or junction. After that, Vorfahrt is determined again by any traffic lights or traffic signs there, or by “priority to the right”.

Can I always go first at Zeichen 301?

No. When turning left, you must give way to oncoming vehicles that are going straight ahead or turning right. You must also not force your Vorfahrt and must be ready to brake if there is an obvious danger.

What is the difference between Zeichen 301 and Zeichen 306?

Zeichen 301 grants Vorfahrt only at the immediately following intersection or junction. Zeichen 306, on the other hand, marks a Vorfahrtstraße whose Vorfahrt regulation remains in effect until a sign cancels it.

Does “priority to the right” apply at the intersection despite Zeichen 301?

No. At this intersection or junction, Zeichen 301 overrides the basic “priority to the right” rule and gives you Vorfahrt over traffic coming from the subordinate roads. At a later intersection without signs, “priority to the right” may apply again.
