When you see the Zeichen
You must not enter the carriageway behind the sign with your vehicle. Stop before entering and choose a different direction, unless a Zusatzzeichen expressly exempts your vehicle from the prohibition.
Rules
- Zeichen 267 prohibits drivers from entering the carriageway from this direction.
- The prohibition generally applies to all vehicles, including bicycles and electric micro-vehicles.
- A Zusatzzeichen can exempt certain types of traffic, for example cyclists with “Radverkehr frei”.
- The sign is positioned on the right-hand side or on both sides of the carriageway to which the entry prohibition applies.
- You must not enter the prohibited carriageway even in reverse.
Tips
- Pay particular attention at one-way streets to whether Zeichen 267 marks the opposite end.
- Always check whether a Zusatzzeichen is mounted below the sign allowing an exception.
- Do not confuse an entry permitted for cyclists with permission for motor vehicles.
- Plan an alternative route early instead of turning or reversing in front of the prohibited entry and endangering others.
Common misunderstandings
- Zeichen 267 is confused with Zeichen 250: Zeichen 267 prohibits entering from the indicated direction, whereas Zeichen 250 generally prohibits vehicle traffic in the area.
- Some learner drivers believe that the prohibition applies only to motor vehicles. Without an exception, bicycles and other vehicles are also affected.
- Another misconception is that entering in reverse is permitted. The entry prohibition applies regardless of whether you are driving forwards or backwards.
Exam tip
In exam questions, a Zusatzzeichen such as “Radverkehr frei” is often the trap. This exception allows only the specified type of traffic to enter; entry remains prohibited in a passenger car.
Did you know
Zeichen 267 is often positioned at the oncoming end of a one-way street. It does not itself indicate the prescribed direction of travel there; instead, it prevents entry from the wrong direction.
Frequently asked questions
May I pass Zeichen 267 by bicycle?
Generally, no, because a bicycle is also a vehicle. Entry is permitted only if a Zusatzzeichen expressly allows cyclists to enter.
What is the difference between Zeichen 267 and Zeichen 250?
Zeichen 267 prohibits entering a carriageway from a specific direction. Zeichen 250, on the other hand, generally prohibits vehicle traffic in the indicated area, unless an exception applies.
May I drive out of the carriageway if Zeichen 267 for traffic in the opposite direction is displayed at its end?
Yes, because Zeichen 267 prohibits entry from the side on which it is visibly installed. It does not prohibit leaving the carriageway.
May I enter only briefly to turn around or drop someone off?
No, entering is prohibited in itself. The short duration or purpose of the journey does not create an exception.
