When you see the Zeichen
You may not enter the restricted area with any vehicle unless a Zusatzzeichen allows an exception that applies to you. You may continue with a bicycle or motorcycle if you push it.
Rules
- The prohibition applies to vehicles of all kinds, including cars, lorries, motorcycles, bicycles and electric micro-vehicles.
- Hand-operated vehicles may pass through the area; riders, people leading horses, and drivers and handlers of livestock are also exempt.
- Motorcycles and bicycles may be pushed because this is expressly permitted.
- Zusatzzeichen such as „Anlieger frei“ may permit passage for the group of people specified there.
- The sign prohibits vehicle traffic, but does not generally prohibit pedestrians from entering.
Tips
- Check early whether you can turn around safely before the sign or choose another route.
- Read every Zusatzzeichen carefully: An exception applies only if you actually meet the condition stated there.
- If you want to continue by bicycle, get off before the sign and push it.
- Do not confuse the red circle without a symbol with Zeichen 260: Zeichen 250 generally also applies to bicycles.
Common misunderstandings
- Many learner drivers think the sign only prohibits motor vehicles. In fact, it generally applies to vehicles of all kinds.
- A common misconception is that cyclists may continue slowly. They must get off and push the bicycle unless an exception is indicated by a sign.
- The sign is sometimes understood as a general prohibition on entering the area. Pedestrians may generally enter it.
Exam tip
Pay particular attention to cyclists in exam questions: With Zeichen 250, they may not ride, but they may push the bicycle. Unlike Zeichen 260, Zeichen 250 generally also prohibits bicycle traffic.
