Actual width (Zeichen 264)

Actual width

The actual width includes the vehicle’s exterior mirrors. The sign may be integrated into a lane-transition board, lane-diversion board or lane board. In that case, the prohibition applies only to the respective lane for which the prohibition is ordered.

When you see the Zeichen

Check whether the actual width of your vehicle, including the exterior mirrors, exceeds the specified value. If the vehicle is wider, you may not use the restricted section or the marked lane and must choose another route or a permitted lane in good time.

Rules

  • The restriction applies to vehicles whose actual width is greater than the width shown on the sign.
  • The vehicle's exterior mirrors are included when checking the width.
  • If the actual width exactly matches the specified maximum, the section may generally be used.
  • If Zeichen 264 is integrated into a lane-shift, lane-diversion or lane board, the restriction applies only to the lane indicated there.

Tips

  • Before setting off, find out the actual width of your vehicle, including the unfolded exterior mirrors; the figure in the vehicle registration document may not be sufficient on its own.
  • At roadworks, move into a lane permitted for your vehicle's width in good time.
  • Do not estimate the width based on the bodywork alone: the mirrors protrude significantly, especially on SUVs, vans and motorhomes.
  • Do not fold in the mirrors to get around an existing width restriction; the relevant measurement is the actual vehicle width including the exterior mirrors.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The width listed in field 19 of the vehicle registration document is used without checking, even though exterior mirrors are generally not included in this measurement.
  • !The sign is misunderstood as a general no-entry restriction. In fact, vehicles up to and including the specified width may continue driving.
  • !With a lane board, it is assumed that the restriction applies to the entire road, even though it may apply only to the marked lane.

Exam tip

A typical exam trap is the question of which width is relevant: what matters is not just the body width or the figure in the vehicle registration document, but the actual width including the exterior mirrors.

Did you know

Zeichen 264 is used particularly often at roadworks where lanes have been narrowed. Explicitly including the exterior mirrors is important because they make many passenger cars significantly wider than the body width shown in the vehicle documents.

Frequently asked questions

May I continue driving with a vehicle that is exactly 2.00 m wide when the sign shows 2.00 m?

Yes, because the restriction applies to vehicles whose actual width exceeds the specified value. The exterior mirrors must already be included in the 2.00 m measurement.

What width is shown in the vehicle registration document?

The vehicle width is listed in field 19 of the registration certificate Part I. This measurement generally does not include the exterior mirrors, which is why you must know the actual total width including the mirrors for Zeichen 264.

Does Zeichen 264 also apply to passenger cars?

Yes, the sign applies regardless of the type of vehicle. A passenger car may not use the section or lane if its actual width, including the exterior mirrors, exceeds the specified measurement.

Does the width restriction always apply to the entire carriageway?

No. If the sign is integrated into a lane-shift, lane-diversion or lane board, the restriction may apply only to the assigned lane.
