End of all route-related speed restrictions and no-overtaking rules
The sign may be integrated into a lane board or widening board. In that case, the sign applies only to the respective lane for which the route-related speed restrictions and no-overtaking rules had previously been prescribed.

When you see the Zeichen
From this sign onward, all previously posted route-specific speed limits and no-overtaking restrictions end. Then check which general maximum speed applies to the road and your vehicle, and only accelerate if traffic, visibility and weather conditions allow it.
Rules
- Zeichen 282 simultaneously cancels previously posted route-specific speed limits and no-overtaking restrictions.
- After that, the general speed rules apply again—for example, 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h outside built-up areas for passenger cars without trailers.
- On Autobahn and suitably constructed Kraftfahrstraße, there is generally no maximum speed limit for passenger cars without trailers; the recommended Richtgeschwindigkeit is 130 km/h.
- Other prohibitions and regulations remain in force, such as no-overtaking restrictions due to unclear traffic conditions, lane separation markings, or posted entry and through-traffic bans.
- If Zeichen 282 is incorporated into a lane or lane-expansion sign, the cancellation applies only to the lane concerned.
Tips
- Do not automatically accelerate sharply. First determine whether you are in a built-up area, outside a built-up area, or on an Autobahn or suitably constructed Kraftfahrstraße.
- Even when the no-overtaking restriction has ended, continue to watch for solid lines, oncoming traffic, visibility and unclear traffic conditions.
- When there is a lane sign, check carefully which lane the sign applies to.
- Remember the black diagonal stripes: they indicate that several route-specific restrictions have ended.
Common misunderstandings
- The sign is understood as cancelling only a speed limit. In fact, it also ends previously posted route-specific no-overtaking restrictions.
- Learners believe that they may now drive as fast as they want. Outside certain Autobahn and Kraftfahrstraße, the general maximum speeds still apply, as does the requirement to drive at an appropriate speed at all times.
- The sign is confused with Zeichen 250 or interpreted as ending all prohibitions. Through-traffic bans, Haltverbote and other independent orders are not cancelled by Zeichen 282.
Exam tip
A typical exam trap is: “Which maximum speed applies after Zeichen 282?” The answer depends on the type of road, the vehicle and the circumstances; the sign itself does not set a new speed, but only cancels previous route-specific speed limits and no-overtaking restrictions.

May I drive faster immediately after Zeichen 282?
You may follow the general maximum speed that now applies. However, you may accelerate only if visibility, weather, road conditions and the traffic situation safely allow it.
Does Zeichen 282 also cancel a no-overtaking restriction?
Yes, route-specific no-overtaking restrictions previously posted by traffic signs end. Statutory no-overtaking restrictions, such as those resulting from unclear traffic conditions, as well as restrictions imposed by road markings, remain in force.
Does Zeichen 282 end a 30 km/h zone?
No, a 30 km/h zone generally ends only with Zeichen 274.2 “End of a 30 km/h zone”. Zeichen 282 concerns route-specific speed limits, not the zone regulation.
What applies if Zeichen 282 is displayed only above one lane?
The previous route-specific restriction then ends only on the lane concerned. It may continue to apply on other lanes.
