When you see the Zeichen

When passing sign 290.2, the restricted no-stopping rule prescribed for the entire zone ends. Afterwards, however, you may stop or park only where no other traffic signs, markings or general provisions of the StVO prohibit it.

Rules

  • The sign ends the no-stopping zone prescribed by sign 290.1.
  • Until sign 290.2, the following generally continues to apply: parking is prohibited; stopping for up to three minutes and longer stopping for boarding or alighting or loading and unloading are permitted.
  • When the zone ends, the zone-related regulations and exceptions prescribed within the zone by Zusatzzeichen also cease to apply.
  • Sign 290.2 does not lift independent stopping or parking prohibitions that apply after the end of the zone through other signs, road markings or general traffic rules.

Tips

  • After the end of the zone, check before parking whether a new Haltverbot or another parking regulation begins immediately.
  • Pay particular attention at exits to the rectangular zone sign with diagonal black stripes; these indicate the end of the regulation.
  • Do not confuse the sign with an entry or vehicle prohibition: it only concerns stopping and parking, not continuing to drive.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Many driving students believe that parking is automatically allowed everywhere after the sign. General parking restrictions, such as those in front of property entrances and exits or too close to intersections, still apply.
  • !The restricted Haltverbot is often confused with an absolute Haltverbot. Within the zone, brief stopping was generally allowed; only parking was prohibited.
  • !Some people mistake Zeichen 290.2 for a vehicle prohibition because of its crossed-out design. In fact, it marks the end of a Haltverbot zone and does not prohibit passing through.

Exam tip

In exam questions, the typical trap is to equate the end of the zone with immediate permission to park. Always check whether another Haltverbot or Parkverbot applies at the chosen parking spot despite Zeichen 290.2.

Did you know

Zeichen 290.2 is typically placed at the exits of a Haltverbot zone. A single zone regulation can cover numerous roads and public traffic areas, meaning that a separate Haltverbot sign does not have to be repeated on every section of road.

Frequently asked questions

May I park directly after Zeichen 290.2?

Only if no other traffic sign, road marking or general regulation prohibits parking there. The sign merely ends the restricted Haltverbot applying in the zone.

What was allowed within the zone?

Within the restricted Haltverbot, stopping was generally permitted for up to 3 minutes. Stopping to let passengers get in or out, or to load or unload, could also last longer, provided this took place without avoidable delay.

Does Zeichen 290.2 also end a separately signposted Haltverbot?

No. An independently ordered Haltverbot continues to apply according to its own signs and, where applicable, Zusatzzeichen.

May I continue driving after this sign with any vehicle?

Zeichen 290.2 itself does not prohibit traffic for specific types of vehicle. Other through-traffic or entry prohibitions may nevertheless apply at this location.
