When you see the Zeichen

Zeichen 270.2 marks the end of the environmental zone previously designated. From this sign onward, the traffic ban imposed by Zeichen 270.1 no longer applies; however, other posted traffic bans remain in force.

Rules

  • The sign marks the end of the environmental zone and therefore the end of the access restriction in force there, which depends on the emissions sticker.
  • The environmental zone ends only at the sign itself; until then, you must meet the zone's entry requirements.
  • Beyond the sign, vehicles without the Umweltplakette required for the zone that has ended may also drive there, provided no other prohibition applies.
  • The sign does not cancel speed limits or other route-specific or zone-specific prohibitions.

Tips

  • Look for the diagonal black stripes: they indicate the end of the environmental zone.
  • Do not remove an existing Umweltplakette just because of this sign, as you may enter another environmental zone later.
  • After the sign, check whether any other traffic signs apply, such as a route-specific no-through-traffic restriction or a speed limit.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The sign is confused with a general cancellation of all traffic prohibitions. It marks only the end of the environmental zone.
  • !Some learner drivers believe that the environmental zone ends shortly before the sign. Legally, it ends only at the point where Zeichen 270.2 is located.
  • !The sign is interpreted as a new entry prohibition, even though it actually indicates the end of the emissions-related access restriction.

Exam tip

In exam questions, the typical trap is the claim that all prohibitions or speed limits are cancelled beyond Zeichen 270.2. The only correct statement is that the environmental zone imposed by Zeichen 270.1 ends.

Did you know

The first German environmental zones were established in early 2008, including in Berlin, Cologne and Hanover. Since then, Zeichen 270.2 has marked the exit from such a zone.

Frequently asked questions

May I continue driving beyond Zeichen 270.2 without an Umweltplakette?

Yes. Because the environmental zone has ended, the Umweltplakette is no longer required beyond this sign. However, another posted traffic prohibition may still prohibit you from continuing.

May I approach the sign from within the environmental zone without the required Umweltplakette?

No. Until you have actually passed Zeichen 270.2, you are still in the environmental zone and must meet its entry requirements.

Does Zeichen 270.2 also cancel a speed limit?

No. The sign only marks the end of the environmental zone; a speed limit ends only according to the applicable rules or through a corresponding cancellation sign.

How can I tell the difference between this and Zeichen 270.1?

Zeichen 270.1 marks the beginning of the environmental zone. Zeichen 270.2 shows the same zone symbol with diagonal black stripes, thereby marking the end.
