End of a 30 km/h zone
Download Teorio and practise for the theory exam.
When you see the Zeichen
Sign 274.2 ends the permitted maximum speed of 30 km/h for the 30 km/h zone. From the sign, the subsequently signed speed applies or, if there is no other regulation, the general maximum speed, generally 50 km/h within built-up areas.
Rules
- The 30 km/h zone regulation ends immediately at sign 274.2.
- The sign does not automatically permit 50 km/h; another prescribed speed restriction may apply directly afterwards.
- If no new speed is indicated after the sign, a maximum of 50 km/h generally applies within built-up areas.
- The sign ends only the 30 km/h zone and makes no separate regulation concerning Vorfahrt or priority.
- Until reaching the sign, the permitted maximum speed of 30 km/h continues to apply.
Tips
- Only accelerate after you have completely passed the sign.
- Immediately after the sign, watch for further speed-limit signs, such as 40 km/h or a new 30 km/h restriction.
- After the end of the zone, check the Vorfahrt rules again; the end of the zone does not automatically mean that you have Vorfahrt.
- Even with a higher speed limit, continue to adapt your speed to visibility, traffic and road conditions.
Common misunderstandings
- Many learner drivers accelerate to 50 km/h before reaching the sign. Up to the location of the sign, a maximum of 30 km/h remains permitted.
- The sign is confused with Zeichen 278: Zeichen 274.2 ends an entire 30 km/h zone, whereas Zeichen 278 ends a speed limit that applies to a specific stretch of road.
- Some people assume that the speed limit is always 50 km/h after the sign and that the road automatically has Vorfahrt. Both points must be checked using the subsequent signs and the specific traffic situation.
Exam tip
A typical exam trap is whether you may immediately drive at 50 km/h. The correct answer is: 30 km/h only ends after Zeichen 274.2; after that, look for new signs before assuming the general maximum speed within built-up areas.
Did you know
Zeichen 274.2 is typically placed at the exit of a 30 km/h zone and is often found on the back of Zeichen 274.1, which marks the beginning of the same zone for traffic travelling in the opposite direction.
Frequently asked questions
May I accelerate to 50 km/h immediately after the sign?
Only if you are within a built-up area and no other speed restriction has been imposed. You may also drive only as fast as traffic, visibility and road conditions permit.
Does the 30 km/h limit no longer apply before the sign?
No. The 30 km/h zone ends only at the location of the sign, so you may continue to drive at no more than 30 km/h before reaching it.
Do I automatically have Vorfahrt after the end of the 30 km/h zone?
No. Zeichen 274.2 only regulates the end of the zone-based speed restriction; Vorfahrt is determined by traffic lights, Vorfahrt signs or, otherwise, the priority-to-the-right rule.
How does Zeichen 274.2 differ from Zeichen 278?
Zeichen 274.2 ends a 30 km/h zone, whose restriction applies to all roads within the marked zone. Zeichen 278, on the other hand, ends a speed limit applying to a specific stretch of road that was imposed by a circular speed-limit sign.
