When you see the Zeichen
Do not stop on the carriageway on the signed side of the road, and certainly do not park there. Continue driving or find a place outside the area of application where stopping is permitted; arrows and Zusatzzeichen determine the beginning, end or time restrictions.
Rules
- Sign 283 prohibits every voluntary stop on the carriageway, even for less than three minutes.
- The prohibition applies only on the side of the road on which the sign is installed.
- A white arrow pointing towards the carriageway generally marks the beginning, an arrow pointing away from the carriageway the end, and two arrows the continuation of the no-stopping rule.
- Zusatzzeichen may restrict the area of application in time or space, for example to specific times.
- Waiting due to traffic conditions, for example at a red traffic light or in congestion, is not prohibited stopping.
Tips
- Look for the red cross: Two crossed red bars mean absolute Haltverbot; a single red bar indicates restricted Haltverbot.
- Do not even stop briefly to let someone get in or out, or to load or unload, within the zone of validity.
- When passing the sign, check the arrows and note whether you have passed the beginning, continuation or end of the prohibition.
- Read Zusatzzeichen in full, as the Haltverbot may apply only at certain times or to a more precisely specified area, for example.
Common misunderstandings
- Many learner drivers believe that stopping for up to three minutes is allowed. This limit applies to restricted Haltverbot, not Zeichen 283.
- The prohibition is confused with a prohibition on entering or using the road. Zeichen 283 allows you to drive on the road but prohibits stopping on the carriageway.
- Briefly waiting for someone is incorrectly considered traffic-related. Anyone who waits voluntarily is stopping and therefore generally violates absolute Haltverbot.
Exam tip
In exam questions, the typical trap is stopping for only a very short time to let someone get out or to unload: With Zeichen 283, even this voluntary stop is prohibited. Waiting due to traffic conditions, for example because of a red light, is still permitted.
Did you know
The official StVO uses “Haltverbot” without an additional “e”, although “Halteverbot” is often used colloquially. The red cross visually distinguishes Zeichen 283 from restricted Haltverbot, which has only one red diagonal bar.
Frequently asked questions
May I briefly let someone get out in an absolute Haltverbot zone?
No. Even a brief voluntary stop to let someone get in or out is prohibited on the carriageway.
May I load or unload goods within the zone of validity?
No. Unlike restricted Haltverbot, Zeichen 283 does not permit stopping to load or unload either.
May I remain stopped there because of a red light or a traffic jam?
Yes. This is waiting due to traffic conditions and is legally not voluntary stopping within the meaning of Haltverbot.
Does Zeichen 283 automatically also apply on the opposite side of the road?
No. Haltverbot generally applies only on the side of the road where the sign is installed; the arrows and Zusatzzeichen must also be observed there.
