When you see the Zeichen

Check which stopping or parking prohibition is designated, extended or shortened by the yellow zigzag marking. Leave your vehicle only outside the marked area; in the case of an absolute stopping prohibition, you must not even stop there voluntarily.

Rules

  • Zeichen 299 is a yellow zigzag line at the edge of the carriageway and indicates the extent of a stopping or parking prohibition ordered elsewhere.
  • At least parking is prohibited within the boundary marking. If it indicates an absolute stopping prohibition, any voluntary stopping is also impermissible there.
  • In the case of a restricted stopping prohibition, stopping is generally permitted for no more than three minutes; stopping for boarding or alighting, or for loading and unloading, may last longer if carried out without delay.
  • The beginning and end of the marking may extend or shorten the prohibited area in relation to the associated traffic sign; the entire course of the line must therefore be observed.

Tips

  • Also look for the associated Haltverbot sign or the local reason for the prohibition, such as a bus stop or fire service access.
  • When parking, make sure the entire vehicle, including any protruding parts, remains outside the marked area.
  • Do not rely solely on the position of the vertical traffic sign: the yellow marking may be decisive for determining the exact extent.
  • If the marking is worn or partly obscured, also use the visible endpoints and the underlying prohibition order as a guide.

Common misunderstandings

  • !The boundary marking is confused with a hatched area. Zeichen 299 typically appears as a yellow zigzag line at the edge of the carriageway and concerns stopping or parking; a hatched area, on the other hand, must not be used.
  • !Learners assume that even brief stopping is always prohibited within any boundary marking. Whether stopping is also prohibited depends on the underlying prohibition indicated.
  • !Some people pay attention only to the associated sign and overlook the fact that the marking can extend or shorten the area covered by its prohibition.

Exam tip

In exam questions, it is often crucial whether the marking indicates an absolute Haltverbot or only a Parkverbot or restricted Haltverbot. So remember: Zeichen 299 primarily makes the boundaries of an existing prohibition visible; its type and extent result from the underlying prohibition.

Did you know

Because of its shape, Zeichen 299 is often colloquially called a zigzag line. It is used, for example, to visibly mark off prohibited areas at bus stops, fire service accesses or sections of the carriageway that must be kept especially clear.

Frequently asked questions

May I stop briefly within the boundary marking?

That depends on the underlying prohibition. With an absolute Haltverbot, even brief voluntary stopping is prohibited; with a restricted Haltverbot, the exceptions provided there apply.

May I park partly on the yellow zigzag line?

No. The vehicle must be completely outside the prohibited area marked by the boundary marking.

Is Zeichen 299 the same as a hatched area?

No. A hatched area according to Zeichen 298 must not be used, whereas Zeichen 299 marks the spatial boundaries of a Haltverbot or Parkverbot.

Can the boundary marking change the area covered by a Haltverbot sign?

Yes. It can indicate, extend or shorten a Haltverbot or Parkverbot ordered elsewhere and therefore define its local extent more precisely.
