Lane boundary, boundary of carriageways and special paths (Zeichen 295)

Lane boundary, boundary of carriageways and special paths

Road markings Zeichen 295

Requirement or prohibition 1. a) Whoever is driving a vehicle must not cross the continuous line, even partially. b) If the continuous line separates the part of the carriageway or special path intended for oncoming traffic, the driver must drive to its right. c) If it bounds a surfaced hard shoulder, outside built-up areas agricultural towing and working machines, horse-drawn vehicles and similarly slow vehicles must drive as far to its right as possible. d) Whoever is driving a vehicle must not park on the carriageway if no lane at least 3 m wide remains between the parked vehicle and the lane boundary line. 2. a) Whoever is driving a vehicle must not stop to the left of the continuous carriageway boundary line if a hard shoulder or special path is present on the right. b) Whoever is driving a vehicle must not cross the carriageway boundary of the central island of a roundabout. c) The only vehicles exempt from the prohibition on crossing the carriageway boundary of the central island of a roundabout are those whose dimensions would otherwise make it impossible to drive through. They may drive over the central island if danger to other road users is excluded. 3. a) If Zeichen 223.1 orders the use of a hard shoulder, the carriageway boundary may be crossed like a broken line marking lanes of a continuous carriageway (Zeichen 340). b) If it bounds a special path, it may be crossed only if parking spaces that cannot otherwise be reached have been provided behind it or property entrances are located there, and use of the special path is neither endangered nor obstructed. c) The line bounding carriageways or special paths may be crossed if a property entrance that cannot otherwise be reached is located behind it. Explanation 1. As a lane boundary, the sign separates the part of the carriageway intended for oncoming traffic or several lanes for traffic travelling in the same direction from one another. The lane boundary may consist of a double line to separate oncoming traffic. The double line may be laid with a gap between its lines; the remaining space may then be filled with green colour, which does not constitute either a central reservation or a structural separation. 2. As a carriageway boundary, the continuous line may also bound a hard shoulder or special path. 3. As the boundary of a special path, it indicates the course of the part of the special path intended for cycling traffic.

When you see the Zeichen

Remain completely on your side of the continuous line and, as a rule, do not cross it even partially. If it separates oncoming traffic, you must drive to its right; exceptions apply only in the expressly regulated cases, such as a property entrance that cannot otherwise be reached.

Rules

  • As a rule, the continuous line must not be crossed, either wholly or partially. Overtaking is therefore impermissible if it would require crossing the line.
  • If the line separates your carriageway from oncoming traffic, you must remain to its right. This also applies to a double line.
  • Parking on the carriageway is prohibited if less than 3 m of lane width remains between the parked vehicle and a lane boundary.
  • A carriageway boundary may be crossed to reach a property entrance that cannot otherwise be reached. For a bounded special path, this also applies to parking spaces behind it that cannot otherwise be reached, provided the special path is neither endangered nor obstructed.
  • The carriageway boundary at the central island of a roundabout must generally not be crossed. Only vehicles for which this would otherwise be impossible because of their dimensions may cross it if nobody is endangered.

Tips

  • Keep a sufficient lateral distance from the line so that neither your mirrors nor your wheels cross it.
  • Before parking, check that at least 3 m of space remains between your vehicle and the line.
  • Do not confuse the continuous line with the broken guidance line: Zeichen 295 must generally not be crossed.
  • Cross the line to reach an entrance or a parking space behind it only slowly and only after ensuring, in particular, that cyclists using a special path are not endangered.

Common misunderstandings

  • !Many learner drivers believe that briefly crossing the line with just one wheel is permitted. However, the prohibition expressly also applies to partially crossing it.
  • !The continuous line is confused with Zeichen 296. With a one-sided lane boundary marking, only the side with the broken line may cross the marking, while taking the traffic situation into account.
  • !The 3-metre rule is misunderstood as the distance to the line. It refers to the remaining usable width of the lane between the parked vehicle and the lane boundary marking.

Exam tip

In exam images, check whether the marking is continuous, broken or combined with one continuous and one broken line. With Zeichen 295, the basic rule applies regardless of whether the oncoming lane is clear: do not cross it. Parking may also be prohibited because a remaining width of at least 3 m is required.

Did you know

Zeichen 295 can be used as a double line to separate opposing traffic. If the two lines are set apart from each other and the space between them is filled in green, this creates neither a central reservation nor a physical separation.

Frequently asked questions

May I cross Zeichen 295 to overtake if there is no oncoming traffic?

No. The continuous line must generally not be crossed even when the oncoming lane is clear. You must remain behind the slower vehicle if overtaking without crossing the line is not possible.

May I cross the line to reach my property entrance?

Yes, if the property entrance cannot be reached in any other way. If the line separates a special path, you must neither endanger nor obstruct the traffic using it.

When may I park next to the line?

With a lane boundary marking, a lane at least 3 m wide must remain between your parked vehicle and the line. If less space remains, parking there is prohibited.

What applies if Zeichen 223.1 requires the use of the Seitenstreifen?

In that case, the road-edge marking may be crossed like a broken guidance line when moving onto the permitted Seitenstreifen. You may change lanes only without endangering other road users.
