End of a pedestrian zone

When you see the Zeichen
Zeichen 242.2 marks the end of the Fußgängerzone, and therefore the end of the special traffic rules that apply in this area. From the location of the sign, follow the traffic signs and general rules that apply beyond it; the sign does not automatically give you Vorfahrt or allow you to drive at 50 km/h.
Rules
- From the sign onward, the special rules of the Fußgängerzone no longer apply, in particular Schrittgeschwindigkeit and the special priority given to pedestrian traffic.
- A speed limit, a verkehrsberuhigter Bereich or another order that follows immediately must still be observed, or applies from that point onward.
- The sign does not regulate Vorfahrt. At a following intersection or junction, existing Vorfahrt signs, traffic lights or, otherwise, the general right-before-left rule apply.
- The end of the Fußgängerzone does not cancel other prohibitions or restrictions, such as a Haltverbot or an access restriction.
Tips
- Do not accelerate before the sign. Accelerate only after passing it and only if the traffic situation, visibility and further signs allow it.
- Even immediately beyond the boundary, continue to expect pedestrians to enter the carriageway or cross the transition area.
- After the sign, immediately look for new speed-limit, Vorfahrt or zone signs.
- Pay particular attention to cyclists and delivery vehicles that may enter or leave the Fußgängerzone at its exit.
Common misunderstandings
- The sign is confused with the beginning of a Fußgängerzone; however, the crossed-out or grey-overlaid symbol indicates its end.
- Learners immediately accelerate to 50 km/h even though another restriction may follow or the traffic situation requires a lower speed.
- Some assume that vehicles leaving the Fußgängerzone have Vorfahrt. However, Zeichen 242.2 does not regulate Vorfahrt.
Exam tip
In exam questions, the typical trap is to assume that 50 km/h or your own Vorfahrt applies automatically after the sign. Always check the further signs and the Vorfahrt situation; the sign merely marks the end of the Fußgängerzone.
Did you know
Zeichen 242.2 shows the same basic symbol as the beginning of the Fußgängerzone, but is marked as an end sign by diagonal grey stripes. It indicates the exact point at which the special rules of the Fußgängerzone end.
Frequently asked questions
May I immediately drive at 50 km/h after the sign?
No, not automatically. Although the general speed limit in built-up areas is 50 km/h, other traffic signs, the specific traffic situation and the required appropriate speed may require you to drive more slowly.
Do I have Vorfahrt when leaving the Fußgängerzone?
No, Zeichen 242.2 does not grant Vorfahrt. Traffic lights, Vorfahrt signs or, if nothing else has been ordered, the right-before-left rule determine who has priority.
Must I continue driving at Schrittgeschwindigkeit beyond the sign?
The Schrittgeschwindigkeit required solely by the Fußgängerzone ends at the sign. However, if a verkehrsberuhigter Bereich follows, for example, or the traffic situation requires slow driving, you must reduce your speed accordingly.
May I park immediately beyond the sign?
The sign itself does not permit parking. You must observe the general parking rules as well as Haltverbote, road markings and further signs.
