When you see the Zeichen
You must turn right at the point indicated by the sign. Move into the correct lane in good time, signal right and pay particular attention to pedestrians and bicycle traffic when turning.
Rules
- The required direction of travel at this point is to the right; continuing straight ahead or turning left is not permitted.
- The sign applies to the traffic to which it is directed by its positioning.
- When turning right, you must use the direction indicator in good time.
- Despite the requirement, the general rules for turning still apply: oncoming bicycle traffic, bicycle traffic travelling in the same direction and pedestrians may have priority.
- Zusatzzeichen can limit the area of application or exempt certain types of traffic.
Tips
- Pay attention to the word „Hier“ in the name: the arrow requires you to turn immediately at the marked point.
- Before moving into position, check your mirrors and look over your right shoulder, especially for cyclists on cycle paths or cycle lanes.
- Reduce your speed so that you can see pedestrians and cyclists in good time and wait if necessary.
- Do not confuse the sign with „Rechts vorbei“: Zeichen 222 requires you to pass an obstacle, while Zeichen 211 requires you to turn right at the indicated point.
Common misunderstandings
- The sign is understood merely as a recommendation. As a mandatory sign, it prescribes the direction of travel.
- Learner drivers confuse it with Zeichen 209 „Rechts“. Zeichen 211 specifically indicates the point at which you must proceed to the right.
- Some people believe that the requirement automatically gives them Vorfahrt when turning. In fact, the normal rules on Vorfahrt and turning must still be observed.
Exam tip
In exam questions, it is often crucial to understand that although you must turn right, this does not give you priority over pedestrians or bicycle traffic travelling straight ahead. Also pay attention to the distinction from Zeichen 222 „Rechts vorbei“.
Did you know
The designation „Hier rechts“ makes the point-specific nature clear: not merely the general direction, but the opportunity to turn located immediately at the sign is mandatory.
Frequently asked questions
May I continue straight ahead at Zeichen 211 if the road is clear?
No. You must turn right at the indicated point unless a Zusatzzeichen orders an exception for your vehicle.
Do I automatically have Vorfahrt when turning right as required?
No. The sign only determines the direction of travel and generally does not change anything regarding Vorfahrt, traffic lights or your duties towards pedestrians and cyclists.
What is the difference between this and Zeichen 222 „Rechts vorbei“?
Zeichen 211 requires you to turn right at the marked point. Zeichen 222, on the other hand, requires you to pass an obstacle or traffic island on its right-hand side.
Do I have to signal right despite the requirement?
Yes. The sign does not replace the direction indicator; you must signal the turn clearly and in good time.
