End of a cycle street

When you see the Zeichen
Zeichen 244.2 marks the end of the Fahrradstraße and, with it, its special traffic rules. Continue carefully and follow the traffic signs and the general rules for the adjoining section of road.
Rules
- The maximum speed of 30 km/h prescribed for the Fahrradstraße ends at this sign; however, you may only drive faster if no other restriction applies and the traffic situation allows it.
- The special priority given to bicycle traffic within the Fahrradstraße, particularly the prohibition on endangering or obstructing it, no longer applies here as a special rule of the Fahrradstraße.
- The sign regulates neither Vorfahrt nor a mandatory direction of travel. At the next junction, follow the traffic lights and traffic signs there; otherwise, priority to the right applies.
- Whether motor vehicles may use the adjoining section of road depends on the traffic signs present there; permission granted by Zusatzzeichen for the Fahrradstraße that has ended does not automatically continue to apply.
Tips
- Do not accelerate immediately after passing the sign. First check the new speed limit and the traffic situation.
- Pay particular attention to cyclists, who may continue riding on the carriageway after the end of the Fahrradstraße.
- At a junction immediately after the sign, specifically look for priority signs; Zeichen 244.2 itself does not give you Vorfahrt.
- Check whether a cycle path, a one-way street or another traffic arrangement begins beyond the sign.
Common misunderstandings
- Many learner drivers believe that the speed limit automatically becomes 50 km/h after this sign. This is only true in built-up areas if no other speed limit applies and the circumstances permit this speed.
- The end of the Fahrradstraße is incorrectly understood as a Vorfahrt rule. However, Zeichen 244.2 says nothing about who may go first at the next junction.
- Some people confuse this sign with the end of a cycle path. Cyclists therefore do not automatically have to leave the carriageway or switch to another route.
Exam tip
A typical exam trap is whether you may immediately accelerate to 50 km/h after Zeichen 244.2. The correct approach is to first check the signs, whether you are in or outside a built-up area, and the specific traffic situation.
Did you know
Fahrradstraßen were added to the German StVO in 1997; Zeichen 244.2 marks only their end and does not establish any special traffic rule for the following section of road.
Frequently asked questions
How fast may I drive after Zeichen 244.2?
The special maximum speed of 30 km/h for the Fahrradstraße ends. After that, the posted speed applies or, if there is no further sign, generally the applicable default maximum speed, provided that the traffic situation and visibility allow it.
Do I have Vorfahrt at the end of the Fahrradstraße?
No, Zeichen 244.2 does not contain a Vorfahrt rule. At a junction, follow the traffic lights and priority signs; if there are none, priority to the right applies.
Do cyclists have to switch to a cycle path after the sign?
Not solely because of Zeichen 244.2. A mandatory cycle-path requirement applies only if there is an appropriately signed cycle path that can be used.
May I continue driving my car beyond the sign?
Generally yes, provided that the following section of road is not closed to motor vehicles by other traffic signs. Zusatzzeichen and restrictions applying to the new section must be observed separately.
