Give way (Vikeplikt)
The sign indicates that drivers have vikeplikt to traffic travelling in both directions on the intersecting road.
When you see the sign
Slow down well in advance, get a clear view in both directions and allow road users on the intersecting road to pass without being hindered or inconvenienced. You must stop if necessary to comply with the duty to give way, but the sign does not always require a complete stop.
Rules
- You must give way to vehicular traffic in both directions on the intersecting road.
- You must clearly indicate that you intend to comply with the duty to give way by slowing down well in advance or stopping.
- You must not enter the intersecting road if this forces other road users to brake, change direction or be hindered.
- If there is a give-way line, it indicates where you must stop if stopping is necessary.
Tips
- Look early to both the left and right, and check both directions again immediately before entering the junction.
- Approach slowly enough that you can stop at or before the give-way line.
- Pay particular attention to motorcycles and cyclists, who can be more difficult to spot or whose speed can be harder to judge.
- Wait if visibility is poor or another road user has to change speed for you to proceed.
Common misconceptions
- Thinking that the sign always requires a complete stop. It is sign 204 «Stopp» that requires you to stop every time.
- Only looking for traffic from the left. The duty to give way applies to vehicles coming from both directions on the intersecting road.
- Thinking it is enough to get into the junction ahead of others. You breach the duty to give way if they have to brake or change direction because of you.

Theory test tip
A common trap is choosing that you must always stop. The correct answer is that you must allow road users on the intersecting road to pass freely, but only come to a complete stop when necessary to comply with the duty to give way.
Did you know
The sign is shaped like an inverted triangle, which distinguishes it from most other traffic signs. Its distinctive shape makes its meaning easier to recognise even when the sign is seen from behind or is partly obscured.
Frequently asked questions
Do I always have to come to a complete stop?
No, a complete stop is not mandatory if you have a clear view and can pass without hindering or inconveniencing others. However, you must reduce your speed and stop if the traffic situation requires it.
Who must I give way to?
You must give way to vehicular traffic in both directions on the intersecting road. This also applies when you are turning right and will only be in the junction for a short time.
Where should I stop if I have to wait?
If there is a give-way line, you must stop before it. If there is no give-way line, you should stop where you have the necessary view without moving so far forward that you obstruct traffic on the intersecting road.
What is the difference between this sign and the «Stopp» sign?
Both signs impose a duty to give way to vehicles on the intersecting road. With «Stopp», you must always come to a complete stop, whereas with this sign you only have to stop when necessary.
