Route marker sign
Symbols on route marker signs may be shown on other directional signs. Route marker signs indicating road numbers may show the letters N
When you see the sign
Read the route number and use it to check that you are following the correct route. If the symbol appears on a direction sign with an arrow or lane indication, move into position well in advance according to this information, without making any sudden lane changes.
Rules
- Vegruteskiltet identifies a specific route by means of a route number or route symbol.
- The symbol from Vegruteskiltet may also appear on other direction signs to indicate which route a direction or lane leads to.
- The sign does not by itself require you to turn; the direction of travel must be read from the arrow or the direction sign it appears with.
- The sign does not indicate a speed limit, right of way or whether the road is a motorway.
Tips
- Remember the route number of the route you intend to follow, and look for the same symbol on subsequent direction signs.
- At junctions, look for the route number, destination and arrow, rather than relying on just one of these elements.
- If the route symbol is shown above or beside a particular lane, choose the correct lane early and change lanes only when it is safe.
- Do not assume that a familiar route number always continues straight ahead; follow the arrows when the route changes direction.
Common misconceptions
- Learners confuse Vegruteskiltet with an ordinary direction sign and think that the sign alone shows which way they should turn.
- Some people think that the route number is an exit number or indicates the distance to a destination.
- Some assume that a particular route number automatically means a motorway or a particular speed limit.
Test yourself
Easy

Medium
The sign is shown together with a direction sign whose arrow points to the right. You are to follow the route identified by the sign. What do you do?

- CI turn right because the arrow shows the direction of the route.
- DI choose the nearest lane because the number indicates the lane.
Hard
What does the letter E in front of the road number on this variant tell you?
- AThat the number indicates the distance to a destination.
- BThat the number is the number of an exit.
- CThat the number belongs to a European route.
- DThat the road is always classified as a motortrafikkveg.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be interpreting the route number as an instruction or as an indication of a motorway. The correct interpretation is that the sign identifies a route; the arrow, position and any lane indications show where you should drive.
Did you know
The route symbol does not have to appear as a separate sign. Skiltforskriften allows it to be displayed on other direction signs, enabling the driver to follow the same route through several junctions and exits.
Frequently asked questions
What does Vegruteskiltet tell you?
It identifies the route by means of a route number or route symbol. It helps you check that you are following the correct route.
Do I have to turn when I see the sign?
Not necessarily. You must read any arrow and the position of the sign to see which direction the route continues in.
Is Vegruteskiltet the same as a direction sign?
No. A direction sign normally indicates the direction to destinations or routes, whereas Vegruteskiltet primarily identifies the route itself.
Does the sign mean that the road has a particular speed limit?
No. The speed limit is determined by separate speed-limit signs or the general speed limits, not by Vegruteskiltet.
