Route marker sign (723.66)

Route marker sign

Direction Signs Sign number: 723.66

Symbols on route marker signs may be shown on other direction signs. Route marker signs indicating route numbers may show the letters N

When you see the sign

Check that the road number or route direction matches the route you intend to follow, then continue according to the further directions. The sign identifies a road route, but does not in itself impose a specific speed, right of way or lane position.

Rules

  • The sign is used to indicate a specific road route, normally by means of a road number and, where applicable, a letter showing the route direction.
  • Symbols from road-route signs may also appear on other direction signs to show which exit or direction leads to the relevant route.
  • The sign does not give priority and does not change the give-way rules; give-way signs, traffic lights and the traffic rules apply as usual.
  • The road-route sign does not set the speed limit. The driver must follow a separate speed-limit sign or the general speed limit applicable at the location.

Tips

  • Note both the road number and any direction letter, so that you do not follow the correct road in the wrong direction.
  • Look for the same route symbol on advance direction signs and direction signs before junctions or exits.
  • Move into the correct lane only when lane arrows, road markings or other direction signs show which lane leads to the route.
  • If you take the wrong route, continue to a place where you can turn around or choose a new route legally and safely.

Common misconceptions

  • !Assuming that the vegruteskiltet shows which lane you must use. It identifies the route, while lane direction signs and lane direction indicators distribute traffic between the lanes.
  • !Mistaking the sign for an ordinary direction sign pointing directly to a destination or an exit.
  • !Assuming that the road number says something about the speed limit or whether the road is a priority road or a motorway.

Theory test tip

A typical trap is to interpret the sign as a lane direction or a mandatory instruction. The key point is that it identifies a road route; lanes, give-way rules and speed are determined by other signs, road markings and traffic rules.

Did you know

The route symbol may be repeated on other direction signs. This allows the driver to follow the same road number through junctions and exits without a standalone vegruteskilt having to be installed each time.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to follow the road route shown by the sign?

No, the sign provides direction information and is not an instruction to choose that route. If you are travelling to a destination along the route, use the road number and any route direction to find the correct way.

Does the sign mean that the road is a motorway?

No. Motorveg is indicated by its own sign, and a road-route number alone does not tell you what type of road you are driving on.

Does the vegruteskilt show which exit I should take?

Not necessarily when it appears on its own. When the route symbol is placed on an advance direction sign or direction sign, its position and the arrows show which direction leads to the route.

Does the letter next to the road number indicate a new road type or a separate speed limit?

No. Such a letter is used to distinguish routes or indicate the route direction and does not change the traffic rules or the speed limit.
