Route marker sign
Symbols on route marker signs may be shown on other direction signs. Route marker signs indicating route numbers may show the letters N
When you see the sign
Check that the symbol or route designation matches the route you intend to follow. At an intersection, follow direction signs displaying the same route symbol, but still position yourself according to lane markings and other signs.
Rules
- Sign 723.64 identifies a specific route and is used to help road users follow that route.
- The symbol from the vegruteskilt may also appear on other vegvisningsskilt to indicate the direction in which the route continues.
- The sign does not in itself require you to turn or choose a particular lane.
- The sign does not change the speed limit, right of way or give-way obligation; such rules must be indicated by other signs or follow from the general traffic rules.
Tips
- Look for the same route symbol on direction signs as you approach an intersection.
- Do not change lanes just because you notice the sign; first check the arrows, lane markings and any lane direction signs.
- If your navigation system and the signs disagree, follow the relevant official signs and find a safe alternative route.
- Note that a small route symbol on a larger direction sign has the same function as the standalone vegruteskilt.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think the sign shows the direction through the intersection itself. Its primary purpose is to identify the route; the direction is shown by the direction sign, arrows or positioning.
- The sign is confused with an ordinary direction sign or table direction sign, which also provides information about specific destinations and directions.
- Some people interpret the route designation as a mandatory instruction. It is guidance and does not on its own require you to follow the route.

Theory test tip
A common trap is to interpret the vegruteskilt as indicating a lane or direction. In the theory test, you should distinguish between route identification and signs that actually indicate lanes, destinations or which way to turn.
Did you know
The route symbol does not have to appear on a separate sign. It can be included on, among other things, advance direction signs and direction signs, allowing the driver to follow the same route through several intersections.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to follow the route when I see sign 723.64?
No, the sign provides guidance and does not make the route mandatory. Follow it if it matches your destination or planned route.
Does the sign show which lane I should use?
Not on its own. The correct lane must be determined from lane markings, arrows or lane and gantry direction signs on which the route symbol may also appear.
What is the difference between a vegruteskilt and an ordinary direction sign?
The vegruteskilt identifies a specific route with a symbol or route designation. An ordinary direction sign normally indicates the direction to one or more destinations and may also include the route symbol.
Does the sign affect the speed limit or give-way obligation?
No. The speed limit and give-way obligation are determined by separate signs, road markings or the general traffic rules.
