When you see the sign

Skilt 723.16 indicates that the road forms part of a Nasjonal turistveg. Follow the symbol on subsequent direction signs if you wish to continue along the tourist route, but assess the driving conditions and follow the regular signs as usual.

Rules

  • The sign marks a specific route and does not in itself require you to follow it.
  • The sign does not change the speed limit, right of way, give-way obligations or any other traffic rules.
  • The symbol for Nasjonal turistveg may also be shown as part of other direction signs.
  • If you leave the route, do not assume that the tourist-route symbol will continue on the new road.

Tips

  • Look for the same symbol well in advance of intersections if you want to continue along the tourist route.
  • Do not rely solely on your navigation app; follow the relevant direction signs if the app and the signs show different routes.
  • Be prepared for the tourist route to be narrow, winding and less efficient than the main road.
  • Plan stops at signed lay-bys and viewpoints instead of stopping in the carriageway.

Common misconceptions

  • !Believing that the sign requires all road users to follow the tourist route.
  • !Interpreting the sign as a warning sign for a winding road.
  • !Assuming that tourist-route status means a specific speed limit or right of way.

Theory test tip

In the theory test, the trap may be to attribute a traffic rule to the sign that it does not have. The correct understanding is that it identifies a tourist route; the speed limit, give-way obligations and lane choice are determined by other signs and the usual traffic rules.

No, the sign does not set a speed limit. Follow the posted speed limit or the general speed limit that applies at the location.

Can the symbol appear on another direction sign?

Is a Nasjonal turistveg always the fastest route?

No, the route is selected for the travel experience and its attractions, not necessarily for the shortest journey time. It may be narrower, more winding or subject to seasonal restrictions.
