Route marker sign
Symbols on route marker signs may be shown on other directional signs. Route marker signs indicating road numbers may show the letters N
When you see the sign
Check that the route shown matches the route you intend to follow. Use the route symbol or road number on the next direction signs to choose the correct direction and lane, but only change lanes when it is safe and permitted.
Rules
- Skilt 723.15 identifies a specific route by means of a route symbol or road number.
- The symbol from the route sign may also be incorporated into other direction signs to show which direction the route continues.
- The sign does not in itself require you to travel in a particular direction; arrows, direction signs and other signage determine which road you should take.
- The sign does not establish priority or a speed limit.
Tips
- Remember the route symbol or road number, and look for it again on signs before intersections and exits.
- Do not rely solely on place names, because a route may be signposted towards several different destinations along the way.
- Move into the correct lane early when the route is shown together with lane arrows.
- If the route symbol disappears from the signage, check whether you have left the planned route.
Common misconceptions
- Assuming that the route sign requires you to follow the route. It identifies the route but is not a mandatory sign.
- Confusing the sign with a direction sign showing a specific destination or a particular exit.
- Assuming that the road number says anything about the applicable speed limit or whether the road has priority.

Easy
What does this sign mean?
- AIt requires you to follow the indicated route.
- BIt indicates which lanes you must use.

The symbol is incorporated into a direction sign with an arrow pointing right, but you are not going to follow this route. What do you do?

- CI choose the road based on my destination and the other signs.

- AIt shows that the N designation and the number indicate the speed limit.
- BIt shows that the N designation and the number identify the route.
- CIt shows that the N designation and the number indicate the lane.
- DIt shows that the N designation and the number indicate the exit.
Theory test tip
A common trap is to interpret the sign as a mandatory sign or as information about the road standard. In the theory test, you should choose the answer stating that the sign identifies a route; on its own, it does not indicate the applicable speed, priority or road type.
Did you know
The route symbol may be repeated on, among other things, advance direction signs and direction signs. This allows drivers to follow the same route through several intersections without a separate route sign having to be installed each time.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to follow the route shown on the sign?
No. The sign helps you find and follow a specific route, but it does not require you to drive on it.
Can the route symbol appear on other direction signs?
Yes. The symbol may be shown on advance direction signs and direction signs to indicate which direction the route continues.
Does the sign mean that the road has priority?
No. Priority must be indicated by separate signs or follow from the usual give-way rules.
Does the route sign show the applicable speed limit?
No. The speed limit is determined by speed-limit signs or the general speed limits, not by the route sign.
