Route marker sign
Symbols on route marker signs may be shown on other directional signs. Route marker signs indicating road numbers may show the letters N
When you see the sign
Read the route number and check that you are following the correct route. If you intend to continue along the route, follow the direction signs displaying the same route symbol; the sign itself does not impose any special give-way obligation or speed limit.
Rules
- Sign 723.13 identifies a specific numbered route.
- The symbol from the route sign may also be displayed on other direction signs to indicate which direction you must drive to follow the route.
- The letters N, S, Ø or V may be used together with the route number to indicate the direction of the route.
- The route sign is a location sign and does not change the rules on right of way, priority roads, lanes or speed limits.
Tips
- Compare the route number with the route shown in your navigation system or travel plan.
- Look for the same route number on direction signs before junctions and exits.
- Pay attention to the direction letter if the same route runs in both directions through the area.
- Move into the correct lane early when the route symbol appears on a lane-direction or overhead direction sign.
Common misconceptions
- Learners think that the route sign shows a destination, but it identifies a route or route number.
- Some interpret the sign as an instruction to follow the route. You may choose another road if the other signs permit it.
- The sign is confused with an advance direction sign, which shows how roads or directions are distributed at an upcoming junction.
Test yourself
Easy
What does the sign mean?
- AIt shows how the roads divide at the next intersection.
- BIt identifies a specific numbered route.
- CIt requires driving in a specific lane.

Medium
You want to follow route 13. The symbol is shown on a larger direction sign together with an arrow pointing right, while the road straight ahead is open. What do you do?
- AYou stop before the intersection because the route number gives vikeplikt (a duty to give way).
- BYou drive straight ahead because the route number determines the direction of travel.
- CYou choose the left lane because the route number indicates the lane.
- DYou follow the arrow to the right to continue on route 13.
Hard
The symbol with the number 13 is placed on an exit sign. How should the number be interpreted?
- AThe number indicates that this is exit number 13.
- BThe number indicates that the speed limit after the exit is 13 km/h.
- CThe number indicates that the exit leads to route 13.
- DThe number indicates that the destination is 13 kilometres away.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, the sign may appear together with an arrow or be placed on a larger direction sign. The trap is to think that the route number alone regulates the direction of travel; it is the arrow and the other direction signs that show where you must drive to follow the route.
Did you know
The route symbol may be repeated on, among other things, direction signs and advance direction signs. This allows drivers to follow a route number over long distances without listing every place along the route as a destination.
Frequently asked questions
What does sign 723.13 mean?
It identifies the numbered route shown on the sign. The sign is used to confirm or show the way to the relevant route.
Do I have to follow the route shown on the sign?
No, the sign is not a mandatory instruction sign. You may choose another lawful route, but you should follow the same route symbol if you want to stay on the designated route.
Does the route sign give me priority?
No. Priority and the duty to give way are determined by separate traffic signs, traffic lights, road markings and the general give-way rules.
What does a letter next to the route number mean?
A direction letter may indicate which direction of the route the sign applies to, such as north, south, east or west. This is particularly useful when the same route number can be followed in opposite directions.
