Parking garage
When you see the sign
The sign shows the way to, or the location of, a parking garage. If you intend to park there, follow the arrow or other directions and move into the correct lane in good time; if you are not going there, you can continue without taking any action.
Rules
- Sign 769 is a location and direction symbol for a parking garage, not an instruction to enter or park.
- The sign does not permit parking along the road or outside the parking garage; other parking signs and traffic rules apply there.
- At the entrance, you must follow separate signs concerning, among other things, entry, one-way traffic, height restrictions and reserved spaces.
- Payment periods, maximum parking times and other conditions must be checked on the signs or at the payment machine in the parking garage.
Tips
- Look for the arrow or the location shown on the direction sign so that you choose the correct exit.
- Move into the correct lane early, but only change lanes when it can be done without danger or unnecessary obstruction.
- Check the height restriction before entering, especially if you have a roof box, bicycle rack or tall vehicle.
- Slow down at the entrance and watch out for the barrier, pedestrians and oncoming traffic.
Common misconceptions
- Believing that the sign means you are allowed to park at the place where the sign itself is located.
- Mistaking the sign for a standard parking sign and overlooking that it points to a parking facility in a building.
- Assuming that parking in the parking garage is free or has no time limit.

Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be interpreting the sign as permission to park. The correct understanding is that it identifies or directs you to a parking garage; the specific parking conditions are shown on other signs.
Did you know
The symbol for a parking garage can be used together with direction signs, allowing drivers to find a parking facility without the full name having to be written on the sign. It distinguishes parking garages from ordinary open-air parking areas.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to enter the parking garage when I see the sign?
No. The sign provides information and directions, but does not require you to enter.
Does the sign mean that parking is free?
No. The price, payment period and other conditions are stated at the entrance, on the payment machine or on other signs.
Can I park next to the sign?
Not on the basis of Sign 769 alone. Whether parking is permitted there is determined by other signs, road markings and the general rules on stopping and parking.
What is the difference between this sign and a standard parking sign?
Sign 769 points to a parking garage and is used as a location or direction symbol. A standard parking sign indicates that parking is permitted in a specific area or along a specific stretch of road, often subject to additional conditions.
