Business area
When you see the sign
The sign indicates a commercial area, such as an area with industrial, storage or retail businesses. Follow any arrow or direction sign if the commercial area is your destination, but choose your position and speed well in advance of turning.
Rules
- The sign provides information about a commercial area and does not in itself impose any mandatory action, restriction or right of way.
- An arrow or the position of the symbol on a direction sign indicates which direction to follow to reach the commercial area.
- The sign does not change the applicable speed limit.
- You must still follow lane arrows, give-way signs, traffic lights and other regulations at the exit.
Tips
- Look for an arrow, place name or other direction sign showing which exit leads to the commercial area.
- Be prepared for lorries, vans and vehicles turning into or out of the area.
- Move into the correct lane early if the symbol appears on an advance direction sign or direction sign.
Common misconceptions
- Assuming that the sign means you have already entered the area; it may also indicate the direction to a commercial area.
- Interpreting the sign as an instruction to turn, even though it only provides information for road users heading to the area.
- Confusing the symbol with a lane or advance direction sign; such signs show route choices and lanes, whereas this symbol indicates the type of destination.

Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be to assume that the sign has a regulatory meaning. The correct interpretation is that it identifies a commercial area; the direction is indicated by the arrow, board or direction sign it is used with.
Did you know
The symbol makes it possible to direct road users to a commercial area as a whole without putting up signs for every individual business in the area.
Frequently asked questions
Does the sign mean that I have to turn off?
No. The sign provides information about a commercial area, and you follow the indicated direction only if the area is your destination.
Does the sign reduce the speed limit?
No. Sign 790.15 does not change the speed limit; you must still follow the applicable speed-limit sign or the general speed limit.
What is the difference between this sign and an ordinary direction sign?
The sign identifies the destination as a commercial area. An ordinary direction sign shows the actual direction, often with an arrow and name, and may contain this symbol.
Should I expect heavy traffic near a commercial area?
There is no separate traffic rule associated with the sign, but such areas often have lorries and delivery vehicles. Pay particular attention to large vehicles that need extra space when turning.
