Ski jumping hill
When you see the sign
The sign shows the road or direction to a ski jump. If you are going there, follow the arrow and other directional signs, but you must still position yourself and turn in accordance with road markings, signals and other traffic signs.
Rules
- The symbol indicates the destination ski jump and is used as part of the directional signing.
- The sign does not give the ski jump priority and does not change the give-way rules at intersections.
- The sign does not establish a speed limit, no-stopping restriction or any other special traffic rules.
- The direction is indicated by the arrow, positioning or design of the directional sign in which the symbol appears.
Tips
- Look for the arrow or lane indication, not just the symbol, so that you choose the correct road.
- Move into the correct lane early if the directional signs indicate that you should turn towards the ski jump.
- Be prepared for increased traffic, buses and pedestrians in the area during events, but do not assume that the sign itself warns of danger.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think the sign warns of a steep hill or a jump in the roadway. Instead, it shows the road to a ski jump as a destination.
- Some people interpret the symbol as a warning sign. It is a directional symbol and does not require reduced speed.
- Some people follow the symbol without checking the arrow or lane. It is the arrow and the overall directional signing that show where you should drive.

- BStop before the intersection because the symbol entails a duty to stop.

- DDrive straight ahead because the symbol is not used at exits.
Hard
You are travelling to a ski resort for slalom and see this symbol on a lane direction sign. Which conclusion is correct?
- AThe symbol warns that the lane has a jump or unevenness in the carriageway.
- BThe symbol warns that the lane continues into a particularly steep downhill slope.

- DThe symbol shows that the lane leads to all types of alpine and skiing facilities.
Theory test tip
A typical trap is to confuse the sign with a warning of an uneven road or steep hill. The correct answer is that it identifies or shows the direction to a ski jump, while the arrow or the design of the directional sign determines the direction of travel.
Did you know
The symbol makes it possible to show the road to a ski-jumping facility without writing the facility's name, and is particularly relevant in Norway because ski jumping has a long tradition and many facilities are located away from the main road network.
Frequently asked questions
Does the sign mean that there is a jump in the road?
No. It refers to a ski jump for ski jumping and does not describe the design or condition of the roadway.
Do I have to reduce my speed when I see the sign?
The sign does not require any specific reduction in speed. However, you must adjust your speed if traffic, visibility or activity at the facility makes this necessary.
Does the symbol always indicate that the ski jump is straight ahead?
No. You must read the arrow, its positioning and the rest of the directional signing to find the correct direction.
Is Hoppbakke the same as a lane-direction sign?
No. Hoppbakke is a symbol for a destination, while a lane-direction sign shows which directions or destinations the individual lanes are intended for.
