Payment by coins at machine
(none)
When you see the sign
The sign indicates that payment must be made by inserting coins into a machine. Choose the signed payment point or lane well in advance, slow down, and follow the signals, barrier and instructions at the machine.
Rules
- Skilt 792.13 indicates the payment method: coins inserted into a machine; it does not in itself state the amount to be paid.
- You must follow the lane markings, arrows and other directional signs leading to the relevant coin-operated machine.
- If the facility has a red light or a closed barrier, wait until your payment has been registered and you receive the go-ahead.
- The information at the payment point states which coins the machine accepts and whether it gives change.
Tips
- Move into the lane marked with the coin symbol well in advance.
- Have the appropriate coins ready before you reach the machine, so that you do not cause an unnecessary queue.
- Read any information about the amount and accepted coins before inserting your money.
- If you have chosen the wrong payment lane, do not reverse or make a sudden lane change; follow the instructions at the location.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think the sign means that card payment is also possible, but the sign explicitly indicates payment with coins.
- The sign is confused with a direction sign or information board, even though it shows the payment method and not a destination.
- Some people assume that the machine always gives change, but this must be checked at the payment point.

Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be interpreting the sign as general information about a toll road or as a direction sign. The correct meaning is the specific payment method: coins are inserted into a machine.
Did you know
Skilt 792.13 belongs to a series of symbols that can be used to show the payment method at a payment facility. The symbol was particularly relevant at traditional toll and payment facilities, whereas Norwegian toll stations today largely use automatic registration.
Frequently asked questions
Does the sign mean that I have to pay with coins?
It shows that the payment point or lane is intended for payment with coins inserted into a machine. If other payment methods are available, they will normally be indicated separately.
Does the sign show how much I have to pay?
No, the symbol only shows the payment method. The amount and which coins are accepted are stated at the machine or on other signs.
Can I pay by card at a machine displaying this sign?
Not necessarily. You can only expect to pay by card if this is indicated separately on the sign or machine.
What should I do if I have entered the wrong payment lane?
Stop in a safe place if required by the facility, and follow the instructions or contact the staff. Do not reverse or change lanes abruptly if this could create a hazard.
