Payment by electronic tag
When you see the sign
The sign indicates that payment at the relevant toll point or in the relevant lane is made using an electronic tag. Make sure you are in the correct lane and follow local signs regarding speed, lanes and any alternative payment method.
Rules
- Sign 792.11 indicates payment using an electronic tag, typically a tag linked to a valid toll-road agreement.
- When the sign is placed above or next to a specific lane, the payment method applies to that lane.
- The sign itself does not provide information about the price, discount, speed limit or right of way.
- The driver must also follow lane signals, speed-limit signs and other instructions at the payment point.
Tips
- Choose the correct lane well in advance and avoid making sudden lane changes near the payment point.
- Do not stop to look for a card or cash in a lane marked for electronic tags.
- Make sure the tag is correctly fitted and linked to the correct vehicle and registration number.
- If you do not have a tag, look for signs showing another payment solution or follow the information provided by the toll operator.
Common misconceptions
- Many people think the sign is a direction sign to a destination, but it only provides information about the payment method.
- Some assume that an electronic tag always means free passage or a discount; the sign promises neither an exemption nor a discount.
- Some people stop under the sign to pay manually, even though tag payments are normally registered without the driver having to do anything at the point of passage.

Theory test tip
In the theory test, the sign may be confused with information and direction signs. Remember that 792.11 describes how payment is made, not which destination or driving direction the lane leads to.
Did you know
The sign belongs to the series showing payment methods at, among other places, toll stations and may be placed next to or above a specific lane. Electronic toll collection in Norway is largely linked to the AutoPASS system.
Frequently asked questions
Does the sign mean that I must have an electronic tag?
It shows that the indicated payment method is an electronic tag. If the sign applies to a specific lane, you should choose a lane or solution marked for another payment method if you do not have a tag.
Do I have to stop when I pass the sign?
Not because of this sign alone. Nevertheless, follow the speed limit, traffic signals, barrier or other local instructions.
Does the sign show that passage is free for cars with a tag?
No. The sign indicates the payment method, while the price, discount and exemption depend on the relevant toll scheme and agreement.
Is this the same as a lane direction sign?
No. A lane direction sign shows which destination a lane is intended for, while sign 792.11 shows payment using an electronic tag.
