Red stop flashing signal
Road users must not pass the signal. They shall stop at the stop line or at a safe distance in front of the signal. A red stop flashing signal shows one or two alternately flashing red lights.
When you see the sign
Stop before the stop line and do not pass the Rødt stoppblinksignal while it is flashing red. If there is no stop line, stop at a safe distance in front of the signal and wait until the Rødt stoppblinksignal has gone out.
Rules
- A red Rødt stoppblinksignal means that road users must not pass the signal.
- You must stop at the stop line if one is present.
- If there is no stop line, stop at a safe distance in front of the signal.
- The signal may consist of one flashing red light or two red lights that flash alternately.
Tips
- Reduce your speed early as you approach the signal, so that you can stop in a controlled manner before the stop line.
- Look for the stop line well in advance; it may be some distance in front of the signal itself.
- Do not start driving just because you think the danger has passed. Wait until the red flashing signal has gone out, and check that it is permitted and safe to continue.
- Keep a sufficient distance from the vehicle in front so that you do not end up stopping beyond the stop line.
Common misconceptions
- Treating the signal as a give-way signal and continuing when the way appears clear. A red Rødt stoppblinksignal expressly prohibits you from passing.
- Stopping at the signal itself even though the stop line is further ahead. When there is a stop line, you must stop at the line.
- Confusing a flashing red light with a yellow light in a main signal. The rule that you may pass a yellow light when stopping safely is not possible does not apply to a red Rødt stoppblinksignal.
Theory test tip
In the theory test, you may be asked where you should stop. Choose the stop line if one is present; otherwise, stop at a safe distance in front of the signal, and never pass while it is flashing red.
Did you know
A red Rødt stoppblinksignal is typically used where traffic must be stopped completely because of a temporary hazard or closure, for example at level crossings or lifting bridges. Two red lights may flash alternately to make the signal especially clear.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pass if I cannot see a train, an opening bridge or any other hazard?
No. As long as the red Rødt stoppblinksignal is active, you must not pass, even if the area appears clear.
Where should I stop when there is a stop line?
You must stop at the stop line and not drive over it. The stop line may be positioned some distance in front of the signal itself.
Where should I stop if there is no stop line?
You should stop at a safe distance in front of the signal. Your position must ensure that you do not enter the area protected by the signal.
Can I drive as soon as the red flashing signal goes out?
When the signal goes out, the stop prohibition imposed by the flashing signal is lifted. However, before continuing, you must check that the road is clear and follow any other signals, signs or barriers.
