Mandatory roundabout
The sign indicates a mandatory roundabout.
When you see the sign
You must drive into and through the roundabout in the direction shown by the arrows, that is, anticlockwise around the central island. Adjust your speed, obey any give-way signs, and choose your exit safely.
Rules
- The sign requires you to drive anticlockwise around the central island in the roundabout.
- The sign alone does not impose a give-way obligation; give-way rules at the entrance normally follow from sign 202 «Vikeplikt» and the associated road markings.
- You should normally keep to the right of the central island or traffic island and must not drive around it in the opposite direction.
- You must signal when changing lanes in the roundabout and use your right turn signal before exiting.
Tips
- Look for give-way signs and traffic already in the roundabout before entering.
- Choose your lane early based on which exit you will use, and follow the signs and road markings.
- Use your right turn signal well before the exit, but do not signal so early that others may misunderstand which exit you intend to take.
- Reduce your speed so that you have time to notice cyclists and pedestrians at the entrances and exits.
Common misconceptions
- Some people think the sign means they must turn right at the first exit, but it requires you to drive around the central island and allows you to take any exit that is otherwise permitted.
- Some people think the sign itself imposes a give-way obligation towards traffic in the roundabout. The give-way obligation follows from a separate give-way sign or other traffic rules.
- Some people mistake the circular arrows for a sign indicating one particular direction of travel, such as påbudt kjøreretning til høyre.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this sign mean?
- AYou must drive straight ahead through the intersection.
- BYou must turn left at the sign.
- CYou must turn right at the first exit.
- DYou must drive counterclockwise around the central island.
Medium
You are going to take the second exit. How should you drive?
- AYou drive counterclockwise and signal right before leaving.
- BYou drive counterclockwise and do not signal before leaving.
- CYou drive counterclockwise and signal left before leaving.
- DYou drive clockwise and signal right before leaving.
Hard
The sign is placed at the entrance, but you cannot see a vikepliktskilt (give-way sign). What can you determine?
- AYou have vikeplikt only if you are taking the first exit.
- BYou always have vikeplikt for all traffic already inside.
- CYou always have priority over all traffic already inside.
- DYou cannot determine vikeplikt from this sign alone.
Theory test tip
Look closely at the shape of the arrows: Several arrows in a circle mean that you must drive around the central island, not that you must take the first road on the right. Also remember that sign 406 itself does not impose a give-way obligation.
Did you know
Sign 406 is often displayed together with sign 202 «Vikeplikt» at the entrance. The two signs have different functions: one requires traffic to circulate in the roundabout, while the other regulates the give-way obligation.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to take the first exit on the right?
No. You may use any exit that is permitted and suits your route, but you must follow the direction of the arrows around the central island.
Do I always have to give way when I see this sign?
Not because of this sign alone. At Norwegian roundabouts, a give-way sign is normally installed at the entrance, in which case you must give way to traffic on the intersecting road in the roundabout.
When should I use my turn signal?
You must signal when changing lanes and use your right turn signal before exiting. If you are taking the first exit, you should normally signal right before entering.
Can I drive anticlockwise around the central island if the road is empty?
No. The sign requires you to drive in the direction of the arrows, which in Norway is anticlockwise around the central island.
