Mandatory direction of travel in roundabout
The sign indicates a mandatory direction of travel in a roundabout.
When you see the sign
Drive around the central island in the direction shown by the arrows, that is, anticlockwise. Choose the correct lane for your exit, and leave the roundabout without driving on the wrong side of the central island.
Rules
- The sign requires you to drive around the roundabout in the direction of the arrows.
- You must not drive straight past the central island or around it in the opposite direction.
- The sign regulates the direction of travel, but does not in itself give you priority.
- When entering, you must follow give-way signs and any other signs or road markings at the location.
- You must signal right well before exiting the roundabout.
Tips
- Look out early for signs, arrows and lane markings showing which lane you should choose.
- Reduce your speed before entering so that you have time to notice give-way requirements and traffic approaching from the left.
- Check your mirrors and blind spot before changing lanes inside the roundabout.
- Turn on your right indicator before your exit so that others can clearly see that you intend to leave the roundabout.
Common misconceptions
- Assuming that the sign means you have priority because you are driving in the roundabout.
- Mistaking the sign for an instruction to turn left at the next junction.
- Following the nearest arrow as if it indicates a specific exit, instead of understanding that the arrows show the direction of travel around the central island.
Test yourself
Easy
What does this sign mean?
- AYou must turn right at the next intersection.
- BYou must turn left at the next intersection.
- CYou must drive in the direction of the arrows around the central island.
- DYou must drive straight ahead at the next intersection.
Medium
You are going to take the second exit. How should you drive and signal?
- AYou drive around the central island in the direction of the arrows and signal right before the exit.
- BYou drive around the central island in the opposite direction and signal right before the exit.
- CYou drive around the central island in the direction of the arrows and do not signal at the exit.
- DYou drive around the central island in the direction of the arrows and signal left before the exit.
Hard
The sign is located at the entrance, but you cannot see any vikepliktskilt (give-way sign) or vikelinje (give-way line). What can you conclude from the sign alone?
- AYou can only conclude that you must turn left at the next junction.
- BYou can only conclude that traffic inside the rundkjøring (roundabout) has priority.
- CYou can only conclude that the direction of travel around the central island is mandatory.
- DYou can only conclude that the nearest arrow shows which exit you must take.
Theory test tip
A common trap is to interpret the sign as a give-way sign. Remember that it only requires a particular direction of travel; the give-way requirement when entering follows from separate signs and any applicable road markings.
Did you know
The sign's three straight arrows show which way traffic must pass the central island. In Norway, traffic drives anticlockwise around the central island, in accordance with driving on the right.
Frequently asked questions
Does the sign give me priority inside the roundabout?
No, the sign only indicates the required direction of travel. Priority and give-way requirements are determined by give-way signs, traffic rules and any other regulations at the location.
Do I always have to drive anticlockwise?
Yes, in a Norwegian roundabout with this sign, you must follow the arrows anticlockwise around the central island. You must not pass the central island on the opposite side.
Do I have to use my indicator when leaving?
Yes, you must signal right well before leaving the roundabout. The signal should be clear, but not given so early that others could misunderstand which exit you intend to take.
Can I change lanes inside the roundabout?
Yes, provided that road markings or signs do not prohibit it, but you must give way when changing lanes. Check your mirrors and blind spot, and signal clearly before changing lanes.
