Obstacle marker
The sign is an obstacle marker and makes the course of the road or an obstacle clearer.
When you see the sign
Be aware that the marking highlights an obstruction or makes the course of the road clearer. Adjust your position and speed so that you pass the obstruction safely, and follow any mandatory signs, road markings or other instructions indicating which side you should use.
Rules
- Sign 908 marks an obstruction or clarifies the course of the road.
- The marking does not in itself require you to pass the obstruction on a particular side.
- You must keep a sufficient distance from the marked obstruction and not drive outside the part of the road intended for traffic.
- If the marking is placed together with a mandatory sign or road markings, those instructions determine where you should drive.
Tips
- Look ahead to see whether the carriageway becomes narrower or changes direction at the marking.
- Reduce your speed if the obstruction limits visibility or lateral clearance.
- Check for oncoming traffic before passing if the obstruction means that vehicles have to share a narrow section.
- Look for other signs and road markings showing which side of the obstruction you should choose.
Common misconceptions
- Many people think that the marking always shows which side the obstruction should be passed on. It is hindermarkering 906 with diagonal stripes pointing down towards the side on which it may be passed.
- Some interpret the marking as a warning sign or an independent mandatory instruction. Sign 908 is a marker sign whose primary purpose is to make the obstruction or road alignment more visible.
- A common mistake is to focus on the marking and overlook mandatory signs or road markings that actually determine the direction of travel.

Theory test tip
In the theory test, the trap may be choosing that the marking shows which side you should pass on. Remember the difference: Sign 908 highlights the obstruction, while the diagonal stripes on sign 906 point down towards the side on which the marking may be passed.
Did you know
Hindermarkeringer are used, among other things, to make fixed obstructions, traffic islands and exposed points at the roadside easier to detect, particularly in darkness and poor visibility.
Frequently asked questions
Does the marking determine which side I should drive on?
No, sign 908 does not alone determine which side you should use. Look for mandatory signs, road markings and the way the carriageway is designed.
Do I always have to stop at the marking?
No, the marking does not impose a stop requirement. Nevertheless, you must reduce your speed or stop if traffic conditions make this necessary for safe passing.
What is the difference between sign 908 and hindermarkering 906?
Sign 908 makes an obstruction or the course of the road clearer without indicating which side to pass on. On sign 906, the diagonal stripes point down towards the side on which the marking may be passed.
Can the marking be used together with other signs?
Yes, it can be placed together with, among other things, mandatory signs showing which side of an obstruction you should drive on. You must then follow the mandatory sign while also taking the obstruction into account.
